I've got some nice tweeters and speakers, so now I want to beef up the low end. I would just get one of those bass packages from Crutchfield, but I can't pick one.
I am completely new to car stereo stuff (my speakers came from the previous owner) so I don't want to mess anything up. He put in a different CD receiver head unit thing (I'm not sure if that makes any difference).
Anyway, what I want to do is get
this set of subs and enclosure, but I don't know what amp I'd need and how to install it.
What is an affordable amp that would properly power those two 12" subs? I don't want to spend a boat load, but I do want it to work with everything. Is there a good resource for learning how to install stereo equipment manually?
I appreciate the help and advice. I'm still a newbie, but I'm hoping to learn a thing or two.
Yes your gonna need an amp, and i would say an amp from 375 - 600 watts rms @ 2 ohms and you should be good...but do you already have an amp? need some more info.....you may need power wires. Installation is not that hard but for your first time it might take you a little longer especially if you have limited amount of tools.
I forgot to mention that in the owners vehicle we put the MLK3's in there They are crazy on that 5.1 and with just the fronts playing you think that there are speakers behind you. They are pretty phenominal especially if you are playing a QSound cd. I have to agree with illdwes in that they are pretty pricey. the MLK3 are about $3100 and the 5.1 is about $1200 retail.
I don't think the car has an amp, so I'll have to get one. If it does have an amp, I'll probably still upgrade. I don't have the car right now so I can't check. I'll be picking it up on Sunday.
Do you think I should get just a mono subwoofer amp or should I look into two channels. I've never purchased an amp before. What would be a good amp that is easy to afford? I probably have room in my budget for about $250 - $300 for the amp and wiring.

Whats your total budget for everything? (amp, wiring kit, subs, box) I would suggest something a little better then the mtx package your posted.

Between $400 to $450 for everything, if possible. What do you suggest? I'm open to just about anything that will sound good.
The follow items are by far much better then any kit you will find in your price range.
Sub -
12" RE SE ~$160 Shipped
Amp -
Kicker ZX750.1 ~$185 Shipped
Box - Custom Built Ported ~$50 but if you dont have the tools or wood working skills, the i would go with this
prefab sealed ~50 Shipped
Wiring Kit -
Kicker CK4 ~$50 Shipped
Total ~ 445 Shipped.

I like that setup and price, SundownAudioNY. Thank you for the suggestions! I took the plunge and ordered everything. I cannot wait!
This beats what I could get on Crutchfield. The total for the subs, amp, and all of the wiring was about $460 shipped. I ended up paying $441.20 for the whole shebangabang.
Thanks a lot! I can't wait to hear how it sounds.
I'm sorry for double posting (I don't see an edit button anywhere). Am I going to need anything special to power this stuff? I don't want to drain my battery or overload anything.
if you are getting voltage drops then upgrade your electrical
BIG 3 BABY...TOP OF THIS FORUM.......
I ran around that much power on my car with factory charging and a good battery, and had minimal voltage drops. You will probably be alright, however upgrades will never hurt you.
Just upgrade your big 3 and you will be set man.

thats a great combo i used to run a single se 12 and i got an invilte to the db drag world finals a few years back :-)
i had 2500 watt's in a ported box tuned to the mid 40's but you get the point.
I had it installed today. Wow. I really dig this setup. My manager from work did the installation for me and he did an awesome job. Unfortunately, the battery thing wasn't long enough to tighten with the power. I have to get one of those things that gives more space tomorrow before I can put everything on.
I still have to figure out a good way to fasten the amp and sub to floor. I couldn't get the drill to go through. After that, I've got the trunk to fix and I should be all good.
Lets see the install pics man.

I'll snap a few after I get everything mounted. I'm very pleased with how it looks (the wires are well concealed), but it looks a bit ghetto without everything properly restrained.
I went to WalMart and got a replacement battery terminal bolt and hooked everything up. I thought I was gonna have to wait until tomorrow to pick something up from Radio Shack. That was a great substitute. It was a lot cheaper, too.
I absolutely love how it sounds. It is perfect for rock (Flirtin With Disaster by Molly Hatchet has never sounded so good). It seems to hit a bit too hard on a few rap songs, though.
Another good thing to come from it all, my friend and I fixed the trunk. We took the latch off and looked at it. Nothing seemed faulty so we put it back as low as it could go. After pulling the bar up (the one that the latch wraps around), everything worked flawlessly. Gotta love a simple fix.
Cool, glade your happy. Look forward to seeing the pics.
