My brother recently went to best buy and purchased a really nice Sony Head Unit for his 1998 sunfire. It came with a free install so he had best buy install it for him, and maybe I'm crazy but from the way it looks when he showed it to me, they did a real crappy job at making it look nice. The thing sticks out from the dash like 3 inches! is this really necessary? My 2000 Grand Am had the exact same factory stereo as his '98 sunfire, and I was able to install it myself without extending the stereo out from the dash, so I'm assuming the sunfire would be no different. Is there really not adequate space to make the stereo face flush with the rest of the dash? Its just a pet peave of mine, I can't stand it when stereo's protrude from the dash! Not to mention the new extention plates best buy uses are hideous... I had them install a radio in my old '89 cavalier and the extention they used for it wasn't nearly as hedious!
If theres enough clearance I may go buy a install kit and re-install his radio for him
There's a plastic piece in the back that makes it stick out. They do make flush mount ones.
The same thing happened with my head unit. Basically what I did was cut the plastic that is blocking it from moving back.

Thats messed up. You figure since the grand am uses the exact same stereo as the sunfire that everything in the dash would be exactly the same
Just because the radio is the same doesn't mean the dashes are.
Yea, similar problem, however since the plastic piece that blocks the stereo is on the bottom, my din dash kit has the radio hole on the top, so it get's clearance, but I get the problem of it pinching the wires between the HU and the plastic piece so it takes me like ten minutes to get everything all perfect to screw it back in when I fix things back there.
so can you cut this piece of plastic off without it messing anything up?
