Hey, im fairley new to this site, i've searched back 7 pages trying to find my answer, and tried the search button twice with no results. im just wondering what would sound better overall (Bass, Treble, sound quality) a set of 4x6's or 6.5's i've got a 2003 Cavalier with an aftermarket head unit and i want to upgrade me front speakers (because they sound like crap, lol) i can't figure out what would sound better. i have tried in at least 5 audio stores and they all sounded very similar.
Thanks,
2003 White Cavalier LS Sport Coupe
6 1/2's > cow dung > dead chicken > 4x6's.
and even if 6.5's arnt in the budget, get yourself a good set of 5.25's.....anything then @!#$ty ass 4x6's
Cow dung > Dead chicken??? Chickens are edible at least....wtf's cow dung done for you.

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

4x6s have more surface area, and two focal points.....

I take that back, I did the math and it's right

How many posts could I possibly make
I was a farmer at one time; cow dung is most excellent fertilizer, and has a sweet smell to it, years upon years afterwards. Chicken, mmm mmmm chicken. then the 4x6's. 4x6's were made for me to poop on.
6.5 seems to be the most popular because it is the biggest that can be fit in our doors. personally, the surface area is about the same, the 6.5's mathematically have a little bit more surface area than the 4x6's, but that will also vary slightly from driver to driver.
if you want everything to be very defined, get yourself a component set rather than a coax or 2 way speaker. you will get a better representation of the different frequencies.

Let me start by saying I am definitely no audiophile! I just like a decent sounding audio. I'm more into performance.
My '96's 4X6s were wearing out(the surrounds were shot) and sound worse every day. I found a deal on some 4X6s and got them. They did sound much better than the stock speakers(remember I was running the fully stock system at this time). I liked it so much I found a deal on some 6X9s and replaced the rears. Even with the stock HU, i could barely hear the fronts, so I turned the fade more to the front. Sounding better, but not quite right.
By this point I'm wanting better sound yet, that and I was in serious need of a CD player. So I got a HU w/ a CD player and more power. Needless to say a big improvement in sound. Problem was the bass wasn't very sharp. I knew at this point I was pushing too much power for the stock 20/22awg wires. In went some aftermarket 18awg speaker wire for the rears, hello clear bass! The fronts were still sounding off, so I rewired them too. It sounded much better and I was able to adjust the fade to 0. My HU has three Front Image Enhancement settings, which works great, but the front 4X6s still are lacking.
That's where I stand right now, with a few options to improve the system. I can get a set of bass blockers/capacitors to block some of the bass going to the 4X6s, but the quality of the 4X6s aren't good enough for that (though a big improvement over stock w/ stock H/U). I could get a better grade of 4X6s (such as the Pioneer TS-P462 a 2 way 4X6 plate, with a small mid, tweeter and built in crossover), which will handle the power and work well with the FIE, but are expensive, in comparison to other choices. Finally I can just get a better grade, bigger speaker, which I plan on doing. For me a better grade full range 6.5" should fit the bill nicely, which I should have done in the first place (,had I done a little reading in this forum!
) Add a small power sub for a little more bass depth, I listen to rock(classic, contemporary and Christian, so I don't need the Booming, heard form three blocks away, type bass) and I should be set for my tastes.
Moral of this rant, get a set of good 6.5s and don't bother with the 4X6s(unless a component system) and save time, money and effort. Edit: And upgade from the stock wiring, if you're pushing any more power than stock.

sndsgood hit it right on the money,at the same time you dont want to go just throwing a 6.5'' speaker in after you've ripped your 4x6 bracket out,a 6.5 will sound alot better if you seal the area off or make a pod for it,often people just rid there 4x6's and brackets out and selkf tap a 6.5'' speaker in its place which is doing it no justice,if your gonna do it seal that baby up(expanding foam, sound dedener etc.) to get its full potential especially if components and/or amplified
do both 4x6 door and 6.5 kick panals with tweets
i replaced my 4x6 with a nice set of 6" rounds with a little custom engineering on the part of a bracket... haha
