I recently bought a optima yellow top battery and its not starting up in the brisk cold. I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem and what should be done or can be done.
Thanks
My manager at autozone tells me to stay the hell away from optima batteries, he says they're nothing but junk, and almost every one he's sold or dealt with, has had problems or has been returned by some very very pissed off people.
i own about oh 7 of them. two in the car right now and never had a problem with mine. Even deepcycled one. yes completely down below nine volts. 4 1000 watt amps beating on it til they quit playing and i realized that the batts came disconnected will do that. you may have gotten a bad one yes it does happen but i cant complain about mine at all. what voltage is it at.

I think people that make blanket comments like that are idiots. No offense to you though.
I live in Chicago and it starts my car up no problem year round. My old boss has them in 3 of his cars and they all fire up even after extended sittings.
I think a lot of people drain them out, by leaving the lights on or something, and then get pissed when it won't fire the car over. Deep cycle doesn't mean it will fire a car when it's dead...it means it can be run LOW and still charged back up and redrained.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

I have had my yellow top in my truck since I got (1 year ago) and I haven't had a problem at all......there are such things as bad batches
Go Premium, it builds character!
So would you guys recommend getting it charged right up or taking it back? I got a 1 year warranty on it.
i have the same issue. im just gonna return mine for a new one assuming maybe it was a bad batch.
I am sure I couldn't have drained the thing with my stereo system. I am only running a RF 3001 amp with 2 10" P2s.
The stock battery ran it just fine and worked fine in the cold and wasn't drained by it (I don't believe).
Unless there is something I am missing and I am drawing to much power. But I returned the battery for a new one so hopefully this one works.

I've noticed that the starter does spin a bit slower not that its colder.... might not be the battery though... could be the starter not liking the cold.
optima has been having issues with reliablity latly. i havent had any issues and ive dealt with about 4-5 of them without issues. but anyway, maybe have your alt checked. if your alt is having issues charging then maybe your running the car off the battery as your driving and thats why its draining. you can go to an autozone and have them check the battery and the alt.

Not quite sure what you mean by blanket comment, but i'm guessing you're referring to my manager to being an idiot, and not me, or atleast i hope your not..

Yeah we do the free testing and you're in and out with no problems....and if you need a new battery we're really good with taking care of the customer, so if they're anything like our store, they'd damage your old one out and replace it with a new one.
I would just say go with the red top, you have more cold cranking amps on it than they yellow, I have the red top for over 3 years now, not a single problem.
Yeah but red tops aren't designed for car audio systems thats why I chose to go with the yellow top. Regardless the yellow top still has more cold cranking amps then the stock ACDelco battery.
I guess I should add that I have noticed that my music cuts out frequently on fast bass songs when I crank the music loud. I have a capacitor to prevent my lights from flickering but I have experienced this problem when I had the stock battery and it continued on when I got the new yellow top. Any idea on the problem with this?
I've had a system on my red top for the duration that I've had the battery, no capacitor either and running a 1000 watt amp, still no problems but it's what you want to go with then go for it man.
did you charge the battery or did you just put it in te car?
if the battery been sittin for a long time then it might of been low when you put it in the car. try to charge it over night or go back and get a new one and charge it over night then put it in the car and see how it does.
Kardain I actually doubt that its a bad HU ground because it was working fine till I started having the battery problems.
I actually went back and got a new one. So far no problems with it. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens.
Keep in mind that an alternator was never designed for, and will not charge your battery. It is there to KEEP the charge and run your electronics. If your system is running your battery down, that is what you need to address.
Would hooking up the big 3 help the issue?
Try charging your battery, and then see if the car starts better. When you run the car with the stereo on, especially at night you are draining the battery faster than the alternator is charging it. When you go to start your car the next day it may be seriously low on amps. And yes, anything you can do to take the strain off the alternator is gonna help. All you are doing by putting a bigger battery in is putting in a bigger storage device...not fixing the problem.

As mentioned, it could be an alt problem then...
Only reason I brought up the HU ground was the mention that you were having the problem on fast, heavy bass before replacing the battery... some HU's don't like that if not grounded properly and will go into a temporary protect-mode.
