need AMP help
Saturday, November 04, 2006 4:03 PM
hey guys, i did a stupid thing yesterday, i forgot to disconnect the battery before i hooked up the power wire to my amp. it shot sparks, then smoke started coming out of it. i'm pissed cuz my fuses didn't blow like they should have, and the ground wire (which was already hooked up) obviously didn't do its job. so i'm thinkin it might have just fried the capacitor. Do you guys agree? also, if it is the capacitor, what does it look like, i got the cover off but dont really know what i'm lookin for. there are no burn marks anywhere. thanx for any help guys.

Which one smells like its burnt the capacitor or the amp becuase if the smoke came out of the amp then its most likely going to be the amp and if it came from the cap then its probably the cap...

Please step away from the car.

1. Your fuses were probably too big.
2. A ground is not there to protect an amp from frying itself. If the ground was disconnected, it woulda done the same as disconnecting the power.
3. You do know there isn't a giant capacitor in your amp right?? If there was a capacitor that blew, you would know.
4. I have never had an amp spark when i connected the power so that makes me think that it was either on when you did it or that there was an internal short.

that is all i have to say

well i didn't really know that the amp doesn't have a giant capacitor in it since i haven't played with there insides too much. i'm going off of a general knowledge of audio equipment and assumed since i've heard people talking about the capacitors in there amps, that there might be one in mine. and with a general idea of what they do, i was thinking that it may have been the problem. as for the smell, i cant find anything that smells. so is there anything else it could be? i've had the amp in my car before and it worked great.

Well man all i can say is change all the fuses check all your connections and if thats not the problem and the amp will not turn on or do anything then its probably screwd or take it in and have the amp looked at by a local audio shop see what they have to say...

ut try the amp first it might still ork just disconnect the wire from the battery then hook it all up then hoook it back up ok ?
