head unit replacement

does anyone know what kind of installation kits, wiring harnesses, etc. i will need to install http://cgi.ebay.com/PANASONIC-MXE-CQ-C7413U-MP3-WMA-Motorized-Face-NEW_W0QQitemZ250032657612QQihZ015QQcategoryZ50560QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem in my 2001 cavalier.

i know that i would need some sort of interface (heard it called different names) to keep the tones that tell you when the keys are in the ignition and all that. but i dont think that all that is going to be necessary to keep. plus i dont really have the money to but one and have it installed.

You need a mounting kit, wiring harness, and an antennae adapter for that car. I reccomend METRA kits as they seem to have the best all around quality. There is an interface you can get to retain your door chimes and what not but that is not necessary and is expensive. I've heard people say if you dont get this harness you will have other problems with your vehicle which is completely untrue. Its just there way of selling a $100 harness. The part numbers are harness- 70-2003 (lose door chimes), kit- 99-3301 ( ISO mount kit but looks clean in the dash), ant adapter 40-GM-10. There is not a switched accesory wire in the factory gm harness so you can either tap accesory off the 25 amp wiper fuse, cold side, or get a fuse holder and tap off the big brown wire in the ignition harness. The dash dissasembly instructions should be in the kit.

the metra kit that retains the factory door chimes retains the switched +12V.

To be honest, you are better off going to an audio store as opposed to buying off ebay for the wiring and kit. This way, if you have a problem or issue, you can take it back. For example, I work for Circuit City---if something doesn't work (like a harness or the kit is incorrect) I would sell you the correct one and exchange it. Ebay, on the other hand, you have to ship back and all that hassle. And the kit is only $20.

As for the door chime module....If you want to retain your factory door chime, go for it. If not, no big deal. I would double check the FAQ on the top of the page to see what other people suggest though, since I have a 97 and I have not worked on a 2000+. Also, I know you need that module if you have OnStar to retain that as well.

i just tried to put it in and it wont turn on..

there is no room back there for the wires and it sits up really far. so i figured i would mess with it later so i left it. i put everything back and hook up the battery and it wont work...

i got a metra wiring harness, and the mounting kit is fine, and the ant adaptor is fine. something has to be wrong with that wiring harness..

i plugged the car wire thing into the wiring harness and soldered all those wires into the plug that came with the HU.. and it doesnt work.. im very angry right now.

the red wire (acc wire) has to be run from either under the column or from the drivers kick.

I know its kinda expensive to go buy an interface, but I bought one for my Cav and a stereo harness and had no problems with the install, works great to this day, the interface is only 3 wires, RED +12V, YELLOW ACC. and BLACK GND, wire it inline with the stereo and there you go.

He has an 01.... so the red wire on the harness is not used. You actually have to run a seperate turn on wire. An easy solution is using the windshield wiper fuse, or the orange wire on the ignition harness. Please fuse the wire too.
