amplifying rears...any different than subs?
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 6:41 AM
so i picked up a set of 6x9 infinity kappa's...the new ones with the crossover. i got an amp for htem too...perfect wattage. my question is this...do i have to build an enclosure for them now that they are amplified...because i bought these plastic baffle things ages ago.. i just dont know if i have to use them because of the free air principles and all that.

is there anything different about amping highs vs. amping subs? ive amped TONS of subwoofer setups...but ive actually never done mains...anybody wanna give me some tips?

I had my infinity refrence 6x9's amped just in the deck. they sounded good till i blew one. i only blew it because the wire ripped out of the first one because it was attached to my sub box and i took a wicked turn one day, and the amp thus overpowered the other one.

i was using a cheap pioneer 800W max amp, which was/is too much power for those speakers, but the gain wasnt turned up all the way.

Im going to assume you have subs, i have my setup on a JL 500/1 sub amp, and i use the output on that amp to run to my mid amp, which filters out bass frequencies, i recommend something like that so you dont hurt the 6x9's leave the subs to the bass.

Only thing different...is you dont use a MONO amp, and you don't run a LPF on them.

I wouldn't use a class D either, stick to an A or an AB

cool deal...thanks as always for your answers wysiwyg...you always help!!! thats what i thought...im sending them full signal because its got a crossover externally that comes with them....so i just didnt know if i had to put them in a baffle, or do something else different.

if you put those plastic baffles on those speakers im gonna drive down there and point and laugh at them till i cant hold my arm up anymore and i loose my voice you'll get no bass that way, run them free air, they use the trunk as an enclousure and will sound way better. i would suggest however, to sound deaden the rear deck to help reduce vibrations

what type of 6x9's are they. are you sure the crossover is cutting out the low stuff and not the stuff higher. ive never seen a set of speaker come with a crossover that cuts the lows out.
