wtf blown sub on 1/3 rated power!?!?!
Thursday, August 31, 2006 7:07 AM
ok i know i will get yelled at for it all being so cheap but hey you got to start somewhere. ok has anyone blown a sub at 1/3 what its rated to take? its a pryamid pnw 12590 rated at 1200 watts, i have two of them wired in dual 2 ohm loads being pused by a volfenhagen 800 watt amp and i woke up this morning and started the car and noticed it was kinda quiet but it likes to do that from time to time but when i checked it i saw one sub that wasnt working, i took it out and both coils lokk ok, dont smell burnt, but they dont have continunity. so i know its fried, still dont understand why. but my question is what would be a good replacement, i plan on doing both, really looking at audiobahns because i have had them before but they seem to need more power than normal too get loud but are great quality and i already have them in my doors and rear dash. is there any suggestions? i will look on ebay, online, and shops local to them memphis area. not really looking at used unless i get a great deal and the subs are, immaculate. btw my pricerange is around 200. thanks again.

How was your gain and crossover structure setup? Im guessing that might have been the culprit. When you turn your gains up too high you clip the signal, that is DC voltage being presented to the speaker, which cuases extra heat which destroys the coils.

$200 for 1 or 2 speakers?

do you plan on keeping your current amp or upgrading later?

What is the RMS power of that amp?

the amp is so cheap i cant find a thing on it online, but it is planned to move up to 500 rms soon. both subs if possible, also i did the setting according to what has been listed on the website before and it has never sounded better. the only thing that has changed is i went from a bandpass to a sealed box, though that speaker wasnt sealed completely because my drill died and i didnt have time to wait for it to charge, would a leak do that to a sub? it hit so much harder sealed, it has been on the same amp for a while. when i changed boxes i didnt adjust it but i figured the box would need a change in gain. thanks

Just sounds like a case of the gain-too-highs. No, from what I know, a leak wouldn't blow a sub, it's the same thing as porting the box, except it doesn't sound good.

Pyramids RMS ratings are infamous for being less than 1/4 of the max watt rating, watch out

got any specs on the subs, i got a 1.25 sq ft selaed box, each chamber is 1.25 and is sealed from each other. i dont really it to handle more than about 500rms combined because anymore than that is too much imo. thanks again, a website would be nice. i was also looking into re but i think they are a little out of my range

Dayton86, I personally have heard the eD subs in action. You will be amazed at the output from those monsters. Elemental designs are way better than anything Pryamid or Audiocrap could ever think about putting together. After hearing the 11Ov.2, I was totally conviced with Elemental designs. I have no doubt that what ever line you choose from ED that you will be extremely happy with them.

GIT 'ER DONE!
