Do I need a capacator? - Audio & Electronics Forum

Whats up everyone? I had a question regarding the system I will be putting in my 03' Cavalier.
- Pioneer Premier DEH-P480MP HU with iPod Adapter
- Pioneer TS-A6981R 6x9 Rear Speakers (80 Watts RMS)
- Pioneer TS-A4670R 7x6 Front Speakers (20 Watts RMS)
- (1) Infinity Reference Sub (300 Watts RMS)
- (1) Rockford Fosgate P2502 Amp (250 Watt RMS)
My question is, will I need a capacitor for this set-up? I plan on getting one eventually, and I don't think I will need one up-front, but any light you can shed on my situation would be awesome. Does this system sound alright? I'm not looking to impress anyone with crazy, over-done bass I would just like a great-sounding upgrade from the stock audio system.
Also, if anyone can tell me where to get a fuse-tap for the +12v Switched Power Lead I will need for the head-unit (I plan on tapping the wipers fuse) If anyone can tell me the way they did it on their j-body I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot!
You're not really pushing much, but you could never go wrong with a cap. It helps the electrical
system of your vehicle a bit. If you're not going bigger (more wattage) then go with a .5 farad cap.
Hope this helps a little.
Thanks for that, MJ. Let me ask you this.
What kind of power can I get from
this Infinity Kappa sub and
this Infinity Reference amp? I read the sticky's on this site about Ohms, etc, and I'm still confused as hell.
Bottom line, I like both the Kappa sub and Reference amp, and before I buy them I would like to know how much power I can get from the pair and if they are a good combo sub\amp. Thanks again for helping me with my newbie questions!

Wait a second, should I go with that same Reference amp that puts out 312w @ 2 Ohms but instead of the Kappa 4-Ohm should I go with a Kappa 2-Ohm? To get 312W RMS from the amp I obviously need to hook it up to a 2-Ohm sub, right?

Wondering if i need a cap as well

I'm not an expert or anything but in my own words........Ohms is nothing but electrical resistence.
The higher the ohm the more resistence, lower ohm then lower resistence. The most you'd get
would be 116 watts at a 4 ohm load. Your amp can't handle a 1 ohm load. If you have anymore
questions just shoot me an e-mail.
Chris, with all that...I'd atleast have a 2 farad minimum. Also with caps,,it makes
your system look good, especially with the lighted ones.
LOL, No one here needs a cap. Period. I run over 2000watts without a cap. Stop spreading crap MJ Mac.
A cap is a band aid for your electrical system. If your just using one, because it looks pretty, your prob doing more harm then good.
Do a Search, its been dicussed.

- (1) Infinity Reference Sub (300 Watts RMS)
There are NO Infinity Referance series subs @ 300 watts. They are 250 watt RMS, 1000 watt peak @4 ohms.
Lets just say i know from personal experiance.

Any autoparts place will sell them.
You don't need a cap. Just do the big 3 and you'll be golden. Heck, you might not even need to do that.
i hate to say this but i agree with el fuego. word for word.
Fuego, you are running 2000 watts and your lights don't dim?? WOW, you hooked it up pretty
good then. Do you have an upgraded alternator also??

Hahah are you kidding me....thats the number 1 reason to get a cap right there, even if it doesnt help
It's all about having fun and giving your own opinion. People will do it your way or their own way.
But I still think the lighted caps are cool..lol
Maybe 2000 watts max @ 14.4 volt

I'm running close to 4500 watts rms and no dimming, no capacitor.
upgraded alt, battery(s), big 3 tho eh

er waaaaaaat

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
LOL
Hey guys,
I'm running a 6 channel 2,000 Watt MA AUDIO amp
0 gauge wiring to the amp
2-10" MA AUDIO subs 300 watts rms
5 1/4" eclipse 2-way front speakers
6X9 pioneer 3 way rear speakers
165 amp alt
and i have not had a prob yet with dimming, until about a month ago, when the bass hits i drop between 1-2 volts so either my alt is going or battery i just havent had the time to look at either.
Just thought i would shed some light on the subject for all and tell you my experience with systems.
Who needs a sig?

Wow, I'm only running 400w RMS for my subs and at a bass kick (800w max) my cluster and headlights dim a little, nothing too bad, infact barely noticeable, but that's just 800w peak, compared to 2000+, that's barely anything. Only reason I'd ever get a cap would be if the rumors are true and it helps the mono block amp to give a harder kick to the subs durring a bass kick, but that'll take a bit more time to look up. I'll do the big three and a yellow top batt before I do a cap.
bring it back from the dead here. you guys should see the dimming 5 kw will do to a stock alty.
u gunna show us?
maybe ill wait to change the alt out til after i put in all the amps and we can see what it does with 10kw
you guy do know that the amp is the one drawing the power right??? it doesn't matter what rms the subs are because it's only gonna push what the amp gives it not the subs...
therefore you have 250 RMS + you might have an internal amp that came with the cav prob...
no you do not need a cap

Lol, I just got the craziest idea, grab a 5f capacitor and hook it up + to - to the battery. I have NO clue as to what it will do, probably nothing, but wow I sound retarded when I'm tired. Go ME!

No cap or big 3. No dimming of lights when I run normal music, but when I wanna let it hit, I get very and I mean very little dimming. May do a big three, but I don't really need to.
You might as well wire a friggin potato in series/parallel. Good thing about the potato is you can eat it. You can't eat a capacitor.
