What did I do wrong?

Ok, first off I would like to apologize if this is a super noob question, I'm embarassed I have to ask. I drive a Civic and I know plenty about Hondas but I'm helping out my roommate who has a 2000 Cavalier. He bought a CD player for his car so I said I'd put it in for him. I got the dash all apart and took the radio out relatively quick but I hit a little snag with the wiring. He's a cheap ass and didn't want to buy the harness to connect the stock radio wire harness to the one for the aftermarket one so I cut off the end off the factory harness and started connecting all the wires. Everything seemed simple enough, I connected all the wires for the speakers no problem which left me with three wires from the head unit. The manual for the head unit says to connect the red wire to an existing ignition circuit or switched 12v source so I connected that to a brown wire in the ignition harness that I found out would work for this online. Then there is a yellow wire which the manual calls "Memory" and says to connect to a battery circuit or constant 12v source. I connected this wire to the orange wire in the factory harness which I found online as the "Radio 12v." The last wire is the ground wire which I connected to a bolt on a piece of metal behind the glove box. When you turn the car on the CD player just does nothing, it doesn't turn on. There are 3 more wires in the factory harness than in the harness for the aftermarket headunit, 2 blacks and 1 purple. I haven't been able to find what they are. I'm guessing at least one is the interior lights because they don't work right now. I've looked it over a couple times and tried to figure it out but to me it seems like it should work right now. Can anyone help me figure out What I did wrong?

The brown wire you connected to for your switch power is the illumation wire. Since you said the interior lights don't come on anymore you most likely blew the fuse. Here's the color list from the FAQ. If it's wrong I'm sure Lenko will be around soon to correct it.

Orange - Battery Positive Voltage (constant)
Red - Battery Positive Voltage (switched) Note: not found in 2000+ radio harness
Black - Ground

2000+ specific:
Purple - Class 2 signal, radio on (2000+ cars only)
Pink - Radio On Signal (2000+ Monsoon, amplified systems only)
Purple - Gain Control Signal to amp (2000+ Monsoon, amplified systems only)

Speaker outputs from radio:
Tan - Left Front Speaker Output (+)
Gray - Left Front Speaker Output (-)
Light Green - Right Front Speaker Output (+)
Dark green - Right Front Speaker Output (-)

Brown - Left Rear Speaker Output (+)
Yellow - Left Rear Speaker Output (-)
Dark Blue - Right Rear Speaker Output (+)
Light Blue - Right Rear Speaker Output (-)

Since you're working with a 2000, there's no switched power source by the radio, it's controlled by the computer. You'll have to run a wire to the fuse panel on the left side of the car.

Quote:

Radio 12v - orange
Radio Ground - black/white
Radio Ignition - SEE NOTE
Radio Illumination - brown/white (dimmer)
LF Speaker + - tan
LF Speaker - - gray
RF Speaker + - light green
RF Speaker - - green
LR Speaker + - brown
LR Speaker - - yellow
RR Speaker + - blue
RR Speaker - - light blue

NOTE: There is no accessory wire in the factory radio harness. You will need to get this from another location. I recommend going straight to the ignition switch. Its the 12ga orange wire...be sure to use a 5 amp fuse if you splice into this wire.

I wouldn't cut off the factory radio plug if i were you. Rather strip back the insulation on each wire, then solder and tape. <br>

That is the wire diagram, take a look at the sticky and it will explain more.

you better disconnect everything and buy the proper harness for it (check the sticky) you can buy a normal harness that doesn't retain chimes. You can seriosly cause some damage if you start connecting those wires. Newer cars use different systems than the older cars.

Ah, you guys. Falling victim to the same mis-information that the moron installers do

The airbags don't go thru the factory deck. Think about it, what if a thief steals the radio? Or you do like most people do, replace the radio with something better. Do your airbags no longer work? No, GM wouldn't be THAT stupid. Now Honda, that's another story... heh... just kidding

If he's already cut off the radio connector, it's too late.

The purple wire is the class 2 communications wire. Tape it off, you don't need it. The black wires are ground. You need those.

You need to seek out a switched wire somewhere else in the car. The brown wire in the stock radio harness is for the parking lights, you don't want that. You DO want the grey wire for illumination though.

^^ not a myth... i live in NY... my man put his deck in w/o the wiring harness... no airbags... on top of that... after a while with it your check engine light will more than likely come on and STAY on... only reason i kno this is because i have a close friend who is a GM dealer... stupid GM...

o ya... not to mention u lose those ANNOYING door chimes... not like it's a bad thing

^ Did you bother to read the sticky? this has all been covered and proven. Lenko knows, listen to him.

Its a myth. When i redid my wiring to my HU, well my NEW HU, i didnt use a harness, and my airbags still work, i know cause i got hit about a week ago and the airbags still worked.

Most likely your buddy doesnt know how to install decks. and prob tapped the airbag harness for power, which is a big no no.

yeah that airbag @!#$ is defnitly not true. so when your wiring without a harness, this is how it goes...

ANY CAR

multimeter needed,
test all wires with car off for your constant 12V - that is your power to connect to yellow on deck harness
turn car on to accessory, test all wires for 12V once you think you have it, turn accessory off to make sure its that, note - accessory does not have 12V in RUN position(turning car on)
now you need to do continuity test for all speakers, pair them up by taping up.
now get a 9V battery and start popping speakers to see what speaker positions correspond. try positive and negative 'popping'. when you have the positive on the correct side it will have more bass response. takes some getting used to.

ground the black wire

white/black - negative front left
white - positive front left

grey/black - neg front right
grey - + front right

green/black - neg back left
green - + back left

purple/black - neg back right
purple - + back right

and then theres illumination, telephone mute and remote which are always labeled... and im tired and im out. peace

I'm beginning to think it's time to do away with that sticky and re-do it (or put the good info in the FAQ, and refer to it from now on).

That thread is full of too much garbage.
