Help with Set Up
Saturday, February 04, 2006 6:36 PM
Alright right now I have an older (3 years old) model Kicker 15" L5 in a sealed box. If I remember correctly (and I could be way off) I made it 3 cubic feet. I'm looking to make a new box for it this spring and am looking for recomendations between sealed or ported and box size. As of right now I am leaning towards a ported box since I've heard there supposed to sound better with the solobaric line. Also I am currently running the sub bridged at 8 ohms off of a Rockford Fosgate 750 Punch Amp. The amp is bridged and if I remember correctly bridged it puts out 750 rms @ 4 ohms. I ran the sub bridged running a 2 ohm load for a while a couple years ago and it was a lot louder but it fried the voice coil and I'm afraid it'll happen again if I have it running at 2 ohms. Please give me suggestions for the new box and also on the way it's wired if you can think of a better way to run it with what I have. Also I have the dual 4 ohm voice coil model not the dual 2 ohm. Thanks in advance.

That speaker is not suited for a ported enclosure. And I just ran the numbers and it calls for a box of eleven and a half cubic ft with normal damping.

The owners manual says between 3-6 cubic feet for a ported box. What's the benefit of a bigger or smaller box and what not. I'm thinking about going somewhere between 3 and 4.5 cubic feet. Can't really afford to go much bigger than that. What you guys think.

with a ported box the sub will get louder some say 3db's, thats the same as you add a 2ed sub or 2 times the power. the olny bad thing is it takes more room (bigger box for ported)

with a bigger box/port its easer to make the sub loud but to big your louse alot of output, and the sub will act like its not even in a box but you don't have to worry about that.

just go with 4.5 cubic ft and tune the box around 35hz's, some people will tell you that a ported box don't sound right etc. but that just means they don't know what they are talkin about and olny listened to a pre made box hat was tuned high.

call kicker and tell them what your lookin for (spl, sq,sql) and they help you with a box and port size for you.

I forgot. You young inexperienced young guys go for the one note BOOMY boxy sound.
Not true low end. You guys will eventually relize that your getting ripped off with most of these over priced subs. And its the other way around Lanman.

Alright maybe this is a real stupid question but how do I go about tuning the box to 35 Hz or what ever frequency for that matter. Also I think I'm going to attempt to make a fiberglass box. Of coarse I am going to be forming the base and frame of the box with MDF and I plan on wrapping that in fleace and coating it with resin. How many layers do you guys think I need for sufficient strength. Also will the fg box effect sound? Any input is welcome. Thanks again in advance.

We do? I must have missed that one. If you want to think we're inexperienced, go right ahead, I'm not stopping you.

What over priced subs? You mean the subs I payed $100 for?

I want to be on the unexperienced list!!!!!!! Then I can sing some Jimmi "Well have you ever been experienced? Well I haaaaaaaaaave" So we should quit dropping big money into subs and get some 30 dollar 1000 watt pyramid subs and we'll be crushing the competition? See I always thought if the box was too big, it would play lower notes not too bad, but it would be extremely boomy and sloppy, but if you get up the higher notes, won't be able to keep up, and sound real sloppy. Guess I was wrong. Looks like you're going to have to take Mike and I under your wing and teach us your ways. We'll try our best to hold back the giggles, honestly.

Tyler - go with at least 3 or 4 layers of resin for strength. As long as it's strong, it won't flex, and it won't affect sound.

You tool an 11.5 foot enclosure is free air almost. so if that was what he wanted to go for he could just set it in the trunk. it would be the exact same thing. And that woofer comes from kicker with a prefab ported enclosure. My car plays music and loud enough to make people get out. Not a 57 hz burp.

to the original poster: go with about 4.5 cubes tuned to 35 hz like mark said. probably about 45-55 sq inches of port. i wouldnt recommend running your amp bridged to 2 ohm mono though. you risk cooking your amp along with the woofer.
