hooked up deck, no power
Monday, January 16, 2006 12:57 PM
What am i missing? I had the day off so i figured i'd put my new alpine deck in my car. first i wire up the harness and take apart my dash. after that i find out best buy gave me the wrong harness/adapter. so i half @$$ put my dash back together just so i can drive it to best buy and get the right harness. i just wired it to the alpine harness, matched all the colored wires and put them together. i hooked it all up, and the deck has no power, does nothing. I don't even hear the deck humming or anything. what did i miss?! I've done this with several other decks and never once had this problem. to top it off, today's high so far is 30 degrees F and i've been outside doing this because i have no warm place to do this. so i got sick of freezing and put my stock deck back in and that works fine. Again, what the hell did i miss!?

the wire harness adapaters aren't always correctly colorcoded, you need to look on the side of the wires . they are usually marked . check them with the markings on your alpine's wires to make sure you didn't hook something up wrong, check the fuse for the deck (inline or on the back of the unit), if you still can't get it to work. unhook the wire harness adapater. go under your hood, hook your 12v switched and constant and your black ground wire(s) straight to yoru battery and see if you can get the unit to turn on that way.

did you get both power wires hooked up? the constant 12V and the ignition wire? the factory players don't use one of them...so when you hook up a wire harness you have to hook it all up and then use the wire coming from the new deck for the ignition wire. most people tap it into the fuse box with the wipers or cig lighter.

fuse is good. i'll check the next time i have a free few minutes direct to the battery. How would i tap into the fuse block? is it the one under the hood right near the washer fluid container?

no no, tap in to the area on the drivers side of the dash...its the panel that comes in contact with the door. use a tester and find a fuse that only is on when the ignition is turned on.

yea as long as you hooked up the harness and stuff right, thats probably the reason its not working. its been so long since i did mine that i'm not too sure if it at least hummed when i turned the car on before i hooked up the ignition wire...good luck.

Yep, since you've got an '05 you'll have to run a wire to the switched (red) power wire on the harness, you can do this by tapping into a fuse on the fuse box, or by going to the accessory wire on the ignition harness.

i could just slip the wire in with the fuse right? It would still be fused that way and just run it over to the alpine side of the wiring harness. and just cap the red wire on the metra harness, correct? just want to double check. I could possibly finish this tomorrow on my lunch break at work (1 hour long) thanks for all the help, i'm not so pissed about it anymore now that i have an answer.

I got the Metra GM Databus adapter at Circuit City. It was like $25 or something like that, and provides the switched +12V you're missing, and also comes with a little speaker installed for the door chimes.

here ya go... you should be able to find it cheaper at Circuit City
GM Databus adapter
Retains door chimes, provides the switched +12V, and does the "radio doesn't turn off until the door opens" feature.

No, that's the price at Circuit too. I dunno how you got it for $25. At least it's better than the Onstar version, $150 = ouch!

might have been, to be honest. it was almost a year ago, but it's definitely worth the hassle IMO.

It's always kinda funny to see the look on people's faces when we tell them they need an $80 harness instead of the normal $17 one.

I did a LOT of research on it first. I had all sorts of people telling me I had to install my factory HU in my trunk or I'd lose my airbags and doorchimes. I about had a full blown arguement with this kid at BestBuy over it. I went to Circuit City, told the guy what kind of car I had, and before I could say anything else, he reached up and grabbed the adapter for me.

i'd like to avoid buying an $80 harness to finish this off. I'm going to try the wiper fuse first, if it works, then i'll be happy. if not, i'll have to suck it up and get that damn harness.

unless you want your door chimes, ALL YOU NEED IS THE 15 DOLLAR HARNESS FOR A 2000 CHEVY TRAILBLAZER. period!
