Please HELP me with this!? sub/amp matching
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 2:43 PM
I have the following-

MTX amp

Elemental Designs midbass driver (dual two voicecoil)

Specs say the amp should push a 150w bridged 4 ohm load, the sub's RMS happens to be 150w RMS when wired like so-

I hooked it up without my enclosure to check it all out, and the amp is barely pushing the sub, switched to low pass and the gain turned all the way up. I'm stumped. I thought I did everything right.

Any clue?

Enclosure is on the way, it's also being built by ED.

The sub can be used in open air aps though, check out excursion video!

Weird how it's hooked up in the excursion video though, notice no fancy wiring for voicecoils. WTF.

150 watts isn't gonna do much in free air anyway....put it in a box and see what happens.

Yeah I kinda thought the same. It didn't do anything free air sound wise.

I just expected to see excursion like on this video and I saw maybe a 1/4 of that movement making me think something was wrong.

My buddy has a class d 200w amp of sorts I might try out if this one doesn't push it enough. I clearly am not going for anything amazing, just light, simple, and a little kick.

that video is playing a test tone..as well as being powered by a Behringer 2400...which is making a LOT more power then your tiny mtx is.

So I assume powering it like such is an easy way to murder that thing! BTW thanks for researching that for me, wasn't sure what they were powering it with. I was under the impression.

I'm worried going this small was a mistake, and that my 6x9's are gonna even overpower this little cute thing making it all a waste of money.

I already bought a sealed box made by them to specs , I suppose some simple modding could convert it to the ported style I had my 10" L7 in.

My GF has a 8" sub with a 300 watt amp. It works great. The box makes a huge difference in the sound levels.

150w isn't too little, just don't expect to bump with it. Wiat untill you have the box before making an judgements.

Movement does not equal sound, try it in the enclosure...
