Question regarding to sub box design
Sunday, November 27, 2005 6:04 PM
I just built a slot port box to hold my 2 sony 10 inch subs. I have them wired in a series presenting a 8 ohms to the amp. The amp is a sony 1200 watt 2 ch. Now What ive noticed since im running the amp at 8 ohms (250 watts bridged 125 watts per sub) the subs are hitting 15 times harder than when i was running them on the individual channels (225 watts per sub per channel) in a sealed box. Is it just the difference in the styles of sub boxes or what. Its got me stumped and few people around here wondering why this hits so damn hard.

The contrary should be true. They should hit harder at a lesser resitance (4 ohm).

I do believe that it would then be the type of box.

I just got done with a similar situation, Audiobahn DVC 12", I inadvertantly wired the voice coils in series, raising the resistance to 8 ohms. The amp had a heck of a time with em. Even with the gains all the way up, still sounded like weaksauce. Read the specs, 100-ishW@ 8 ohm vs 400 @ 2 (single channel) or 800 @ 2 bridged.

Since I have 2 subs goin, kept it at 400w each as that is more than plenty loud enough for me.

yea im going to try and see what happen with them wired normally. just cant drop the amp to 2 ohms it doesnt like it. i did at one time but it was powering a pair of 8's. now i just need to find screws to hold the wires on the other channels.

Should be able to get away with 4 ohm. Sony subs, if I recall correctly are SVC 4 ohm.

Should be gettin 250-325 RMS @ 4 ohm wired normal.

The power rating you gave for your amp was1200 watts. Assuming this is the peak output at 4 ohm, this would be roughly 300 watts RMS per channel. If your subs are rated to handle it, go for it and run them each on their own channel. But the Sony subs I've been seeing are rated for like 300 watts peak, and in a ported enclosure, I would bet you're gonna fry the voice coils.
