this might sound stupid but i am in welding class and was wanting to know if you know of anyone trying to make a speaker box out of any kind of metal. just a question

I'd think a metal box would sound horrible, simply because metal doesn't absorb sound almost at all. It would just echo inside the box, so porting would sound even worse. Wood, however, because its softer it'll absorb sound so much better, and in turn get cleaner sound. I would think if you really dont give two @!#$s about sound quality (and I mean REALLY dont care) then it may be louder. Unless of course you're making it out of thick 1/2" or 1/4" thick metals, then I'd think it'd sound just like a regular box. Just set up the box so you never ever have to open the box unless needed (like changing a blown sub) buy a wire terminal from radio shack, or if you really want to, fabricate one, wire the subs however you want (I usually do it in parallel) and then stuff the box with insulation.

Please note what I said above is what *may* happen, I've never tried it, never seen it done, just what I think would probably happen. However I would not recommend it, no matter how desparate for a box you are.
