Quick question about wiring
Sunday, September 11, 2005 11:07 AM
I'm trying to help my friend wire up a sub and amp he bought for his car. He bought a 2-channel alpine amp that is rated for 140w x 1 (rms) at a 4 ohm load. The sub is a 10" Rockford Fosgate punch with 4 ohms impedance. Now the plan was to bridge the amp to get the most out of the combination of amp and sub. Now that I've been reading into bridging it I'm wondering if it will work. I've learned that in theory the amp is going to "see" about half the impedance that the sub actually has so if we bridge it the amp will see approximately 2 ohms. The amp is rated for 140w rms at 4 ohms. Is the amp going to be damaged? I'd hate to wire this up for him and fry his amp. Here's what the specs say from Alpine's website...

Heat Sink (WxHxD)in : 9-1/2” x 2-5/16” x 6-13/16”
Heat Sink (WxHxD)mm : 241mm x 60mm x 172mm
Input Impedance : 10k ohm
Input Sensitivity (for rated power) : 0.2V - 4.0V
Power Requirements : 14.4V DC (11V to 16V)
Signal to Noise (S/N) : 100dBA (referenced to rated power)
Slew Factor : greater than 5
Speaker Impedance : 4 or 2 ohms(stereo), 4 ohms(bridged)
Weight : 1.88kg

Where it says speaker impedance has me wondering if I'm just freaking out over nothing.

Thanks for any help.

Gotta love the two-toner.

You should be fine running a single 4ohm SVC sub when bridged.
