fog lights+harness
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 12:12 AM
hi, installed some piaa driving lights not too long ago and have had a problem of forgetting to turn them off when i leave the car. I've drained the battery on a couple of occasions and was wondering if i had made a mistake connecting the wires. the wiring harness required me to splice into one of the headlight wires, i did it but the fog lights do not turn off with the headlights... they still receive power after leaving the car (engine/lights off/keys out)... does anyone know what the correct wire is to splice into?

thanks, hope this makes sense..

Here's what you do.....

Find the brown wire (if I remember correctly) in the drivers side kick panel. It's the 12V parking lights. Get a relay (30A), and hook it up like this:

86: Brown parking light wire
85: Ground (-) I would put the switch between here and the ground
30: Positive 12V
87: Fog lights

Now everytime you have parking lights on and the switch on the lights will come on. Once you turn off your parking lights the fog lamps will turn off too or use the switch.

Hope this helps,

Jay

thanks for the help, just a quick question, the kick panel are you talking about the fuse box? and by getting a 30A relay is that a fuse rated at 30A? thanks, i'm not very familiar with the electronic terms

It should be under the piece of plastic trim running by your feet along the bottom of the door. There will be a buch of wires under there. Some will be brown, it's one or a couple of those. Just check which one gives 12V when the lights are on.

A relay is kind of like an electronic switch. The way I told you to wire it is that if the parking lights are on, it will let the current flow to the fog lamps. 30A is how much current the realy handle before you fry it. Radioshack sells some 1A realys that you will fry in about 30 seconds. So get the 30A one with a harness.

I'm thinking he shouldn't do anything!! Instead, he should find a car guy in his area that knows electronics and give him a few bucks to do it.

Sergei, the reason that your fogs are staying on even when the car and headlights are off is because our cars have a switched ground headlight system. As you know, there are three wires on the headlight harness and they're this order - Ground Positive Ground. One of the grounds (low-beam) has a lower voltage than the other, which is how the low-beam/hi-beam works. And the positive is always hot.The way you currently have your fogs wired, the positive of the fogs must be wired to the always hot positive wire. Using the relay method above will work, or you can use the same relay and tap into the low-beam ground wire. One potential problem tho is if you still have your DRL's on/active b/c then your fogs will turn on during the day unless you turn off your over-ride switch.

holy crap lol it wasnt that confusing, i did it...

heres a few pics, if u click my sig my cardomain page has more pics on page two

heres the diagram i used

heres the brown wire i tapped into (its right off the corner bulb)

a bunch of wires...

and a FUSE later.... (dont forget a FUSE)

we get fogs that come on when the parking lights or headlights are on, using the stock switch.. pretty nifty

yes!!!! thanks, i'm gonna try that out and if it doesnt work for some horrible reason then i'll just put my switch somewhere where i can see it better.....

you dont need a switch if u use the relay

A switch is helpful if on the off chance that you have to drive with parking lights only (airport parking garage, military commisaries) or if you just don't want to have your fogs on at the time. But I'll have to also agree with the relay.

a switch would require alot more wiring and it would have to be in the cabin to be pratical

Not really. All that would need to be done is run the wire from the park light trigger to the cabin to the switch, and back to the relay. 10 extra minutes, maybe.

Besides, since the O/P presumably already has a switch installed, the wiring is already in place. It would then be a matter of hooking it up in the correct wiring sequence.

hey thanks for all the help everyone, i already have an in cabin switch and i spliced into the brown wire coming from the corner marker. it turns the fogs on when the headlight switch is in the second position. no more drained batteries.
