My speedo is dancing WTF

Ok this is the damndest thing I've ever seen. I've got a couple of 12's in my trunk w/ a 1600watt amp and my speedometer moves up with the bass like the needles on the amp. It gets worse the faster I'm going. At 60 its about 4mph at 75 it about 10mph, it doesn't move at all below 30mph, when it starts doing it....the bass gets a little quieter too. Do I need a better battery or a strike cap or 3 or what? Oh ya the car has electric gauges....and the speedo is the only one that does it.

Seriously guys...this is kinda freaking me out

Once payday rolls around I'm gunna install a strike cap and wire the alternator directly to the battery. And if that doesn't do it I'll get the srongest battery I can find.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Check the power and remote wires to the amp and see if they run next to the gauge wires. If they do try moving them and see if it goes away. Could be the fluctuating voltage is affecting the gauge? That's all I can come up with.

Have you ever installed overlay gauges that required you to pull the needles out? I knew someone who did that and later were having the same problem as you are.

Nope, stock guages, If I turn the stereo down it gets better so it shouldn't be the remote turn on. The bass doesn't hit as hard either. It didn't start doing it until I had the system in for a few days.. I'm thinking that the 1600watt amp it too much for the charging system, my fog lights started getting dimmer last time it did it at night. I know from having past charging problems that the speedo starts jumping if voltage gets too low, I just didn't think of it until now.

I've got a higher output than stock alternator, but I have a cheap wal-mart battery in it.
Im thinking if I get one of those high amp solid state batteries, run a cable from the battery terminal of the alt to the battery, mount all of my wires hooked to the battery better, and get a strike cap, it might solve the problem.

Anyone know where I can get a smaller alternator pully that will fit a 93 sunbird alternator and still cool it well enough? And how big of a strike cap should be used with a 1600watt amp?

General rule of thumb is 1 Farad for everything 1000 watts.

weebel, optima yellowtop, my buddy back in az got one before i left, he was running at least 2000 watts in total, he had a pretty nice digital cap though, but when he put that yelowtop in everythign just seemed that much brighter/responsive/ect they really are a good battery, next in line is a marine battery for deep cycle, if you're considering playing it while the car isn't running for anextended period of time
