Upgraded ALT-BATT Wire... Problem
Sunday, June 26, 2005 8:48 PM
I recenlty upgraded my ALT-BATT wire with a 4 GA wire, and also ran a ground wire, also 4 GA, straight from a mounting bolt on the ALT to my BATT.

I used a 150A fuse on the positive side, which hasnt blown, so I dont understand my problem...

With headlights, foglights, underbodies, subs, AC... like everythign on in my car, it was difficult for my car to drop below 13.2 volts at idle... but now today I was driving with just my radio and subs on, and at idle, I only got 12.2 volts...

When I rev it went BAM up to 14.7, but then slowly dropped to 12.2 again.

After a while of driving I noticed that (at idle) my level returned to about 13 volts.

I checked the fuse and it's okay, and my belt doesnt appear to be slipping or anything like that. And Im assuming my ALT isnt going bad, since the voltage shot back up when I revved.

Any idea what could be going on?

A few side-notes/questions...

Is it possible that my battery is able to hold a charge better now that I've upgraded the wires? I ask because when I shut my car off the voltage would slowly drop from 14.7 to 12.6 (it goes slow because I also have a CAP). But now, after upgrade, it only drops to about 12.8 (and is still there after sitting overnight).

If you read... I also put a wire from a mounting bolt on my ALT straight to my BATT. I'm sure this helps some (a lot?)... Is this what people call hyper-grounding? If not, what is it?

Hypergrounding the daisy chaining your ground wires across your engine bay.

I personally would not have grounded your battery to the alt bracket. I would have grounded it to either a fender or the battery tray. Usually the shorter the grounds, the better.

? though, are you using a fuse between the alt and the battery, for the positive terminal? if not, that will be a problem.

Im unsure if the fuse you speak of is for your system, or the fusible link.

no only do you need to do the alterntator ground..but you also need to upgrade the batteries ground to the chassis.

I have a 150 Amp fuse on the POSITIVE wire from ALT ot BATT.

Any idea on my random voltage drops though?
