New headunit

I was wondering if I got a new headunit would I have to keeo the hold radio somehwere elsin the car if I wanted the "Door open sounds". I was talking to a guy a tweeter and he said they move the old radio somewhere els in the car with a long harness, this seems very odd to me can someone clear this up.

Yup. The t-harness will cost around 50-60 bucks, and all you keep are your chimes. For around $10-15 bucks you can buy a regular harness, and lose the chimes. Personally, I don't have the chimes anymore. They annoyed me anyways.

I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....
1) Breaking things is expensive, and
2) Horsepower isn't cheap.

^^^^ Agree. Just get the cheap harness and loose the chimes. Relocating the radio somewhere else in the car seems like a really dumb idea.

Wee that sounds like fun. Where should I have them run the old radio to? My spare tire spot is open, would that be fine?

Some rumours and why they're false

GM's new wiring can be scary - ask a few installers who haven't worked on a 2000+ J-body, and you might hear one of the following rumours:

* Your oil light will stay on (nope, sorry)
* Your car will not start (go ahead, try it)
* The factory security system will no longer work (different module altogether)
* Your air bags will deploy (unless you wire into them, they won't)
* The oil life sensor system can't be reset without the factory head unit (option not even available on Cavaliers!)
* Your automatic transmission will no longer shift (not connected to the radio)
* RDS radios are wired differently (no they're not)

I'm sure there are more "bad rumours" out there, but those are the common ones I have heard of. Simply put, the only thing different between the Class 2 wiring and conventional pre-2000 wiring, is that the radio is always plugged in and now the BCM controls when it goes on and off. It's that simple. As far as the Class 2 wiring is concerned, the factory radio only receives data, it doesn't send any. So you can safely remove the factory deck and no real harm will occur.

There have been a few cases reported of air bags going off, however I can't seem to confirm ANY of them. The only real reason why the airbags would go off is if the air bag system had not been properly disabled, or if the wrong wires had been tapped for the install of the new deck.

If you take your car somewhere to get the radio replaced, and they tell you one of the above rumours, either tell them to get their facts straight or take your car somewhere else (I will work for beer!!). They obviously don't know what they're doing. And I honestly wouldn't recommend letting someone who has no idea touch YOUR car!

The real problems

As far as real 'problems' go, there are TWO actual, guaranteed-to-happen 'side effects' to replacing the factory radio, no matter which deck you have (RDS or not!).

Scotty B If you want to retain the chimes, there is another way to do it without having to remote the original radio. Best Buy sells an adaptor. Hopefully the link I provide for you will work.

You can relocate the deck and keep the chimes, buy the Metra GMRC01 Interface harness and keep the chimes, or you can do without. That's all there is to it.
