What is going on here???

Ok so two weeks ago i was just driving down the street and my battery light came up. I checked my capacitor and it said that the voltage was 11.5 not the usual 13.8. When I got home I left my car running and I disconnected the negative post on my battery and my car shut off. I then removed the straight cable I had running from my alt to my battery and played with the alternator some to see if I could fix it. Well, it didn't work so I went to a junk yard and pulled an alt. from my car and put it in mine. My car was fine although the voltage only went up to 13.5 but today about 2 days later I had the same thing happen to me again. The voltage is down to 11.3 and this is really frustrating me. Can anyone help me come up with some ideas. I really don't want to get another alt and have this happen to me again. Could the sensor in the alt. be out of wack or something. Oh and this might sound dumb but where does the alternator ground to or does it just ground through the battery ground. I'm going to check all the wire agian to see if any of the wires are bad.

No fusible link?

What gauge wire?

Well i know my alt has its own seperate ground. The battery has its ground on the battery tray.
