Well, my engine is blown, and i had this mechanic come look at it; he said that the water pump failed which caused the timing chain to fail or something along those lines. Does this sound correct? I was reading a different thread and it said his water pump failed but it didnt cause any damage but that....
Also, i thought there was a thread about which engines are the exact same, which im pretty sure older malibus, grand am's(and more), but im not sure the exact years.
Could anyone tell me or direct me to the thread cause i found a 99' Grand Am 2.4l engine and im wondering if it is the exact same one. Thanks.
what year is your car. also, quick google search brought this up:

in summary like eight or nine people in that thread have had to change the water pump on their 2.4s and are now having timing problems, so its probably a common thing. i read somewhere that the water pump is driven by the timing chain, if thats correct however im not sure as i have a eco 2.2 not a 2.4, but i know that some of the cavaliers have whats called an interference motor, meaning if the timing chain fails and the car jumps timing, the vavles can possibly hit the pistons causing all kinds of fun engine failure.
define blown motor, lots of people blow the timing on interference motors and are able to salvage them, providing you dont fire it once you know the timing is shot and strip it to find any problems.
get a new beater and pull that motor for the winter and tear it apart

From what i've read on here the 2.2 eco is an interference engine, whether or not the LD9 is i don't know.
just because your water pump failed (common) does not mean your timing chain needs changed..and most people that have timing problems after doing a water pump simply do not know how to time it properly.
and yes..for the most part 2.4s are all the same..no matter what car they came in..just keep in mind 96-99 had egr and 2k + did not
They 2.4 was discontinued entirely as of 03 wasn't it .
half way through 02 the 2.4 was killed. yes the 2.4 and eco are both interferance motors
theres a few things you would have to change depending on the year 99+ maybe 98+ had a 3 bolt exhaust manifold downpipe the older ones were 4, the 98 or 99+ injectors are different and the egr thing. if your getting an EGR less motor and you have EGR you have to change the exhaust manifold, intake manifold for the EGR. you can use the GA motor, change the waterpump before you put it in way easier

The 2.4L differences are 96-98, and 99-02.

The mechanic showed us the timing and it was almost loose enough to just slip off.
and alright thanks for all the help
