I just swapped a 96 z24 engine into a 98 body and ended up with one extra sensor on the oil pan of the z24 motor.
There is no plug in the 98 LS's wiring for this. What is this sensor for? It is located right beside the drain plug.
I assume it's for a warning if the oil gets too low/hot??? Anyone know for sure?

search function?
I miss my Cavalier, even if it made 100 hp on a cold day and had more suspension then it deserved.
Nice answer, D-Bag.
And what do I search for. Oil pan sensor?
either provide helpful information or stick your head somewhere else.

It's a low oil level sensor, so yes. Are you wiring the engine to an LN2 PCM? I ask because I was under the impression that all 96-98 LD9's had it. The 99-02 LD9's don't have it.. If your PCM doesn't use the low level sensor, then you can just leave it alone/unplugged.
I may have a late 98 model, but there was no sensor on the 98 engine....and thank you for the HELPFUL information Whalesac, hahaha
so that means that i can buy a 96 quad 4 and swap it into my 01 z?

yes swap injectors, knock sensor, and exhaust manifold i dont know why the hell ud want an older engine in an 01.. especially with the rod bearing problems in the earlier models 96-98

The rod bearing issue didnt end in 98. I have seen 02's do it as well.

So what triggered that light in later years?
good question i don't recall even noticing this on the 2.4 maybe cause the 2.4s a junk. by the way my 97 had 211000km on it an ran perfect got over 600km a tank, my 99 bought it with a spun bearing i thought the older ones were better didn't they change the rods in the 00+ i remember here about a bunch of 00+ blowing up i thought the best years were 96-97 for the 2.4
JBO since July 30, 2001
I changed a 2000 2.4 last week at work, lets just say (#1) piston wasnt connected to the crank anymore. it appears that the bearing spun first, it hammered and hammered till it couldnt hammer any more. broke the oil pan and sent metal shavings through the block. scrap!
So I dont believe GM fixed anything.
