3400 swap-plug and play
Friday, February 22, 2008 5:14 PM
i know im new to the forum, but i have been looking for this for a while. now i know where to get the motor, but i was wondering about accessories (mounts /wiring harness/ etc.) what are my options in order to get this back out on the road as fast as possible? for instance, if i take the ECM and wiring harness from the same car as the engine and re flash it, will that work? i know there are specific motor mounts i can buy that will fit, but i can not find the car's make and model for it.

again, i know its a really noob question, but i have the resources for an engine swap, but not for fabrication. this is why i ask. any help would be appreciated.

I'll eventually take the time to put something here. I swear.

mount info is in the sticky.

OBD2 is doable, and with your car having a BCM, probably easier.

Yes and is preferred.

Actually I think it will be easier for 00+ owners to do the swap cause of the class 2 serial data is used both in the 3400 stuff and the 00+ j-bod. Your cluster (minus the fuel gauge) will function as it normally would. Yes the tach too. the 2200 auto trans will bolt up, it would be the 4t40e , and is almost Identical to the grand am gt 4t45e. The difference will be in the gearing and the ecm's ability to choose the shift points wisely. No one so far has installed a 3400 behind a 4t40e, I used the 4t45e in mine cause I didnt want to take the chance of the ecm shifting at the wrong points causing either slipping ofr hard shifts.
Check out the sticky, all of this stuff is in there.

^^ shift points and line pressure can be altered w/ HPT

Slightly off topic, but Joe, does the fuel gauge go through the serial data in the BCM on the newer ones? I'm confused as to why it wouldn't work, since the sending unit always used to connect directly to the cluster, at least until 99. This has had me wondering since I found out you put in an aftermarket fuel gauge.

okay. so how do i tell wether i have the 3t40 or 4t40? i mean i could fly down the road and count shift points, but as i live in northern VA, thats something not highly reccomended. a 2000 dollar ticket is something im not fond of.

What are the letters & numbers on your gear indicator?

If it's P R N D 2 1, it's a 3 speed.

If it's P R N D 3 2 1, it's a 4 speed.

quicklilcav, the 00+ fuel sending unit goes to the J pcm, the gam also goes to the pcm. so in theory you should just have to hook up the serial data and it should work, right?
Well , no , there is something in the grand am pcm flash that determines how / where etc to menipulate the serial data to send a good signal to the cluster. And the J cluster doesnt recognize the gam signal.
Now I flashed the same pcm to a 03-04 malibu and the gauge works, but the trans shift points are all out of wack. Tranny's are different.
Now if someone knew what in the flash is not allowing the gauge reading to be transfered for the grand am flash, but works with the malibu flash, It would work. The problem is that the dealer has limited knowledge of the contents of the flash program to be able to do anything to fix it.
So If there was a way to mesh the two flash programs, there would be a true 00+ swap out there. Nothing that doesnt work!

HPT? You should be able to look at all the shift info from the GA, and then change the tables on the ECM that has the Malibu flash.

So for anyone doing a swap on an 00+ with a manual tranny, the Malibu ECM is the way to go, at least for a start.

FYI, I have the serial datastream description files, but I'm not sure if there is a way to flash them into the ECM. I've been looking at this for the possibility of flashing new description files to work with different clusters, but I haven't been able to get an answer from anyone if it can be done or not.

That depends if HPTuners even reads the flash from the Malibu. From what I understand GM used a lot of different flashes for the V6 in something like the Grand Am alone, so HPT may or may not work with a GA so it's hard to tell if HPT can read the Malibu file.

Though you could always send the file into HPT.
