starter question
Thursday, August 02, 2007 10:05 AM
i went to the parts store today, they asked if i had the gear reduction starter, they tell me to pull my old one and then bring it in to match it up with one of thiers.
i asked if the direct drive and gear reduction starters were interchangeable, they say no. I really doubt that if the gear reduction starter was an optional feature on the car. Im figureing they dont want a direct drive turned in as a core for a gear reduction starter.

im willing to let them keep the core charge if the gear reduction starter would work on my car.

well it seems the direct drive sarter is for 5 speed cars and the gear reduction starter is used on auto trannys maybe because of the added weight of the tourqe converter. a guy called me from an auto recycle place and said they are interchangeable, but im gonna research more first. before i buy one

My '98 2200 5 speed has a gear reduction starter, wish I did have the direct drive, they're a lot cheaper to replace.

Not to sound dumb, but how can you tell if its direct drive or gear reduced on a J-body? I can tell the difference on a Chevy V8, do the Cav starters have the same differences?
Is there any benefit to using the gear reduced over the direct drive on these engines?
I was pretty much forced to get a gear reduced starter on my old truck (10.5 to 1 compression) as the stock starter kept dying, and it definitely seemed to start much easier, plus I liked the extra header clearance from it, and it was a good bit lighter than the direct drive.

they salvage guy tells me one had a larger diameter around the motor, but i dont know which is which. i went with the direct drive again just because it is alot cheaper, and heck i can always roll my car to a start :p

the gear reduction starter is tiny. like real tiny. like exhaust pipe sized. the full size starter looks just like a small block chevy starter (at least it does on a 2.2)

Theoretically in 2001 they started using a gear reduction starters on the 2200. Or you can go with the starter from a 3400.
