Auto Transmission swap
Friday, August 18, 2006 6:50 PM
Does any one know which OEM axles will swap with an 01 cav 4spd 4t40E auto besides the grand am 4t45E and alero 4t45E. Im talking about the inner joint here. I know the outers are different.

What Im looking for is another option for an auto tranny swap besides the 4t45e. Want to know why Im doing this, look at my posts in the (progress of v-6 swap) thread. This is all over a gas guage.

Any suggestions would be great. thanks

I seriously think that you should try another sender before you try this. What sender do you have in your car now? The grand am or j body?

J. sender. I have tested the two for resistance differance and have found none. Both have the same resistances, actually the two fuel tank units are almost Identical. The resistor boards are exact.

If I connect the sender wires together at the pcm the guage does nothing, if I touch the ppl guage wire to the ground , nothing. The two wires are 5v ppl and sensor ground blk. Pcm reads the voltage drop across the sending unit which will be , currently 1. something volts. as viewed through the scan tool.
It is converted to serial data and sent to the Inst cluster. Inst cluster is not recognizing the gam serial data for the gas guage. That is my theory of operation. Its very hard to get any straight answers about the actual serial data or the guage operation any where.

I have a guy that repairs guage clusters checking into it for me. I dont know yet if he can help but he is looking for a possible cause.

What im thinking is that you are using the J-body cluster so maybe its not recognizing the N-body fuel sender even though you have the N-body PCM. Its just an educated guess. Maybe before you go to the extend of swapping the tranny out, throw the J-body sender back in and see what happens, if its still the same, then I was wrong and you go ahead and change the tranny.

I fixed the guage so I dont have to find a different tranny now.

What did u end up doing? Thats awsome to hear, so you pretty much have all the bugs worked out then?

Yeah I got everything working like factory. All guages function, chk engine light works, A/c is super cool, tach , speedo, and so on.

What I did to solve the gas guage problem was use the cav pcm for the guage. Thats all the cav pcm does, just the gas guage. I havent yet mounted it but I drove it yesterday evening and to work today. So all looks good.
The cav pcm only has a few wires in the plugs left that Im using. 2 grounds, the sending unit 5v ref, and sense ground. I connected the serial data line and the 2 powers.

I have no bugs, just a factory appearing 3.4 cav. The way they should have been made to begin with. I wouldnt be afraid to drive it any where.
Check out the pics on page 9 of v-6 swap progress. Shooff posted them for me cause i didnt know how to do it yet.

I saw the pics, very factory looking, good job man. Im gonna be doing the same thing with my swap. Im using my sunfire pcm to run the gauges and the donor engine pcm for everything else.

If it helps at all the malibu and Impala will recognize the all of the guages. The only auto trannys that I found were direct drop ins are the 4t40e and 4t45e. The axles will pop right in with no problems.
The problem is that the Impala didnt come with the 40 0r 45.I think it is the 4t65e which takes a different output shaft design. The malibu had the 40 but only offered the 3.1. Which is the same 4t40 that came in the cav. If you choose to do the same swap as mine, the only guage your sunfire pcm will have to operate is the fuel. Get a gam pcm bracket for under the dash, It fits pretty good with little modifications. And mount the sunfire pcm in its stock location. Since the wires for the fuel guage are the right length for the location you wont have to lengthen them. Good luck with your swap, If you got any q's send me an email.

Oh no man, Im not doing a 3400. Mine will be far from a bolt in and far from stock looking! lol
Plus mine is going to be a 5 speed.
I do really like how yours looks though, very stock looking. Very good clean job man, you should be proud.

Some one needs to figure a way to keep the weight transfer to the back to a minimum. Its awful. It seems like the front of my seat raises when I munch the gas, then the tires break loose.
