my brakes are grindin and i needed an oil change, so i went to AAA who i usually get to fix my car. apparently it was much worse than i thought. the front pads are gone and the rotors are goin, the back is almost metal to metal, and sumthing's leaking (forgot what he said). so this is what they quoted me...

i know there's got to be a cheaper way. could i get the parts from autozone n do all this myself? any help is appreciated...

Yeah, absolutely you could do it yourself. If you have any mechanical skills whatsoever, you should be able to pull it off in a day. I would recommend a full replacement of the front rotors. The rear drums could be resurfaced, but I'd check to see how much a replacement set is, compared to a resurfacing. The wheel cylinder is the cylinder that activates the rear drums. Once you replace that, you have to bleed the brakes, to get the air out of the lines. Other than that part, you should be able to do the whole thing by yourself. Get yourself a Haynes manual while you're at Autozone, and you'll even have step-by-step instructions.

I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....
1) Breaking things is expensive, and
2) Horsepower isn't cheap.

They were raping you on the brakes. 106 for crappy rotors? you have to be kidding me. You can get powerslots for that much. 99 for a wheel cylinder is to much as well. They were also sticking it to you by "replacing" the hardware in the rotors. You don't really need to do that.

Here's your shoping list:
1 set of premium pads: $35
2 premium rotors: $50
1 wheel cylinder: ~$10
2 drums: $70
1 set of shoes $20
1 bottle DOT3brake fluid $5
5 qts oil $15
1 oil filter $5
Grand total: $210
