Cage time for the cav
Sunday, August 03, 2008 5:10 AM
Finally got some time friday and saturday to do the cage in the cavy. The work is all happening at Berg Racing in Webster, NY. John Weisberg (shop owner) made up the hoop and I did the hoop plates yesterday. Today we managed to get all of the rear section fabbed and tacked in. We still need to make door bars and finish tacking the rear part enough to be able to get it out of the car to do the final welds. Im hoping we can have it done monday or tuesday. With any luck painted by the end of the week.

I think we have about 6-7 hours into this so far.

Progress pics.

More to come.

I still don't understand why everyone is making their cages attach to our weak ass rear strut towers. The down tubes need to come all the way back into the trunk to really support the car.

I do like the "permanent" rear strut tower brace though. I'm installing on once I get the rest of my 10 point cage done because I hate the one I have.

Oh and remember not to file down the welds AT ALL. If you clean them up you won't pass tech, at least not for the NHRA.

How do you get that out for final welding?

You weld it up inside the car. That's how we did mine. You just gotta hope you left enough room to reach ever area of every pipe to make complete welds. For my A-Pillar tubes to my halo we're actually taking the windshield out to do the welding LOL.

Yeah I saw that too but thought he was mistaken. I really hope they aren't gonna try and remove it LOL. That's more headaches than it's worth.

I think he still does car shows, so they probably tried to tuck it as close the the body as possible.

Alot of time my builder does take the rear halves, even of full cages, out to final weld. In this case it just wouldnt fit thru the door so we had to do it in the car. Anyway, its done and home now. I just need to finish up the priming and painting. Maybee tomorrow nite.

Also you always want it as close to the roof etc as you can get it, more room before you and your noggin.

Few pics of the masking nonsense.

and after paint.

pulled the paper off yesterday am and took a couple quick pics. There are a couple little spots that arent perfect, but whatever, its about as good as I can get it with the windows in.
