Alright, on most roads im getting a howling noise that i am not to sure if its the bearing or the tires. as soon as i hit some fresh tarmac its perfectly quiet.. so my question is if this howling is really road noise and i am a paranoid freak, or is it a bad bearing?
i have jacked the car up and have felt for play at the 12/6, 3/9 positions and everything feels good. i have also replaced the fronts last year with timkin's and installed and torqued to the proper specks, 70 for the inside 3 and 180 for the axle nut. i have since re-torqued everything to make sure. i have also threw on my winter tires with no change in consistency.

Since you've tried different tires, and it seems to go away on smooth roads, my suggestion would be to hold out to see if it gets worse.
If it's road noise, or even tire noise shared by both your set of tires, it's probably not going to change much with time. A wheel bearing should progress into a more easily diagnosed issue as it worsens. (I once stupidly drove a wheel bearing until it literally sounded like I was on bulldozer tracks. I thought it was snow and ice jammed in the wheel well.)

The thing is, they are good tires. on my 14'' steelies i have michelin hydroedge's. i know they have a pretty hard tread (800 treadware) but they are still nicer tires. and on my set of z24 wheels i have michelin pilot exalto's with a soft 350 tread ware. evil cavaliers.... i guess ill just wait and see what happens! thanks for the comments

There are roada around here that transition to different surface types. When going from one surface to the next, you can definitely hear the difference. Most likely, there is nothing wrong with the car, it is just road noise. Being that you drive a J-Body, you are more prone to hearing road noise than you would be in a higher end car.
Sounds like it is road noise. You can try this. When on a road that you hear the noise, turn the wheel slighly to each direction (enough to shift the weight of the car from side to side) and see if the noise goes away. You can do this slowly not fast. If noise goes away when turning in 1 direction or the other then it might be a wheel bearing on the side you are turning away from. Be careful when doing this at higher speeds and make sure you have room to do it.
