Ground Control ???
Monday, April 30, 2007 4:27 PM
I saw on Gravana that there are 3 different types of Ground Control coilovers. Just curious, what's the difference? They have a listing for stock applications, KYB, and Koni's. What is the reason for the 3 types, I thought all the spring perches were the same. I know the KYB and stock are the same, and the Koni's are inserts for the front, so what's the difference?

the Koni have a thicker shaft in the front, but I think the big difference is most likely spring rates so that the struts can handle it. However most people will tell you that any kind of lowering on stock or stock replacements is a bad idea. they just were not meant for it. do a lil search so you can answer your own " but other people do it " questions. I can tell you that I had to ride around on my pro-kit for a few days while I waited for a a replacement part from from Koni. its was bone jarring at best. I was never so happy to have my Konis back on car.

okay end of speech.

Yeah I remember doing that on Ken's car. He's got Ground Controls on GR-2s. But I wasn't aware of any difference. I've been on sportlines and GR-2's since my first modded J, my 96Z. I'm just thinking about a change and saw that there are three different Ground Controls out there. So if I get the G.C. coilovers for Koni's, a future investment, will they fit on the GR-2's?

I've got the stocks in my attic no need for that. But that just means I'll have to get everything all at once. Thanx for the info.

First off, don't put coilovers on stock shocks. It's stupid and dangerous.

The difference between the various GC kits is purely in the hardware. They've engineered them to fit properly on each of the various struts available. That doesn't mean the struts can handle them. They just know that people are idiots and will cheap out and put them on stock stuff, and don't want to be held liable if they don't fit properly.

The only strut listed that can handle them are the Konis. That's what the spring rates are engineered for and that's what will work for you. Forget about the others.

Why not the GR-2's? I've had these on my sprotlines forever. I've not had any issues with them. I understand what you're saying about the hardware. I would not put them on stock struts, I believe the only reason this was brought up is because you have to use a stock housing for the Koni inserts in the front. I believe.

GR-2's won't work well because they are a factory replacement strut. Spring rates on the Ground Controls are like 4X that of stock springs. GR-2's will be unable to properly dampen the car when traveling over a rough surface, leaving your car bouncing all over the damn place.

I know they are stock replacements, but I've not had an issue with them being too bouncy with the sportlines. What's the difference in spring rate between the ground controls and the sportlines. If it's not much, shouldn't I expect a similar ride to what I have now.

I need to re-open this thread, I want to purchased ground controls but how do you install them in the front?Do I need to cut the spring seats?what about the strut mount bearing? My friend purchased a cheap one from ebay and did not remove the spring seats so it doesn't lower all the way.and he needs to remove the strut bearing because the springs doesn't go in.thanks...

The Ground Controls come with fool proof directions.

alright so I have my gr2s with the GC's. I will say they've been on for about a year now and all 4 struts are blown to hell. In fact they were all blown by lets say the first 2 months. But I got the GC's for KYB struts and the ride is bouncy obviously, but I was lowered on goldlines and stock struts before and that was alot worse then what I have now.
