Cam shaft timing marks

Help.

I am changing the head gasket on my '86 sunbird convert with 1.8L OHC. When tearing down I made sure the timing mark on the crankshaft pully was at -10 TDC as the Haynes manual stated. I did not look to see if the camshaft mark was also at its mark before taking off the camshaft carrier and head. The timing mark on the cam is actually 180 degrees off where its supposed to be according to the manual.

Has anyone had this problem before? Should I re-assemble with the cam marks aligned like the manual or put it like is was before?

I know that I can probably end up bending valves or having a non running engine if not assembled correctly. Any advise ?

your cam turns at half the rpm of the crank. so it takes 2 revolutions of the crank for 1 revolution of the cam.

just leave the crank alone (its still at 10 btdc) and put the belt on with the cam aligned to the timing mark its supposed to be, and itll all be fine.
