Salvage Title Question
Saturday, May 02, 2009 10:36 PM
Im not sure if this post needs to be in Other Cars or if its ok here. Mod please move if its in the wrong place.

Recently Ive been discussing a project with my dad. I want to replace the Fire with a Civic. Dont flame me for going to the other side. My dad works for Honda our other cars are Hondas. So its how its gonna be. Im wanting to do a B18C1 swap into said Civic. Ive been searching around for a car with a possible blown motor etc that would have caused it to be written off by insurance and make it cheaper for me. So my question is this. Would I be able to obtain a Rebuilt/Salvage Title in the State of Ohio for a car that doesnt have the factory intended motor? I read something saying that salvage parts out of state arent valid for use on a car in Ohio or maybe I misunderstood it. But if that were true I would have to find a motor in Ohio. Also will I have to pass an emissions test? I dont hink passing emissions would be a problem but its nice to know. I read a couple of sites but Im still kinda lost. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

1st off - Ins. doesn't total a car because someone blew the motor in it. If it was in a accident and the motor was damaged then they might depending on the value of the car/ the cost of the repair. If your buying a car with a salvage title, it was in an accident (collision /fire /flood) that was going to cost to much to fix. Make sure you find out what is exactly wrong with the car or the history on why it was salvaged. I work in the collision from time to time and there are a lot of people trying to make a buck and unloading their junk.

2nd- When you go to the State Highway Patrol for the inspection you must have a description of what was damaged and what you fixed and a receipts for ALL the part that you replaced. The receipt must have the parts bought specified on it. They are real picky too! If you go to the BMV they should have a packet on what you need. It's $50 for the appointment /inspection ticket. If you loose the ticket your out $50 and no inspection. They are real tight. If it is just thrown together like 1/2 of the stuff I've seen people do on here through the years they won't pass it. The whole point is to make sure the car is road worthy and doesn't have stolen parts. So if it has a cracked windshield -replace it, broken mirror-replace it, etc and do the job right.

Quote: no ofence man but if you have so much experience in all that why does your car look like crap?

I was thinking they might write it off if the fix (motor-trans) wa worth more than the car which will probably be an older Civic 95ish.

Usually the only time an insurance company will total out a vehicle because of mater/transmission damage is when it's caused by water. Not careless-ness of the owner or their own stupidity.
