lsj valve cover on l61 head?
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 1:37 PM
Soo Ive been seeing these pop up more and more on j's, searched and couldnt find much info...Soo what kind of modding needs to be done to use an lsj cover on an l61 head? Coil modding isnt much of a problem as I have everything to do an external coil swap, just decided Im gona get an msd dis as well. Want to mod/paint a new cover and would much rather swap to an lsj if rather simple. Thanks

That didnt really answer his question. Someone in a different thread found a piece that covers the cam pos sensor cut out, I believe it was from a dsm.

It shows the difference between the two, kind of obvious to me what needs to be done.

it uses a dsm block off plate, idk for what if it's egr or cam sensor. but that and a few other things need to be taken care of

I think I was the first to do this. There is a block off plate that is needed. A few areas on the cover need to be modded, and the l61 coil pack itself needs to be modded, then a cover plate for the coil pack needs to be made aswell.

Evo, after looking at your thread that Rous linked us to, did you end up making a custom cover plate to mount the l61 coil pack to the LSJ cover?

Okay, that's what I sorta figured, but it confirms an idea I had for a later date, but nice job btw.

Evo any chance you could do a short writeup on this or basicaly what kind of modding is needed to the lsj cover itself?

Also another thing Ive been wondering..I want to add fittings on the top of the cover for more venting to a catch can but I was wondering if I could do a bulkhead instead of welding bungs and the lsj look easier due to the smooth surface and also looks like it sits higher. Would I have clearance underneath an l61 cover to do this? Not sure how much clearance there is between the cams and cover, sorry Im an eco newbie lol.

Why not just drill and tap for the fittings like everyone else?

OR check the mideast forum and buy my cover with the coil cover to use the stock l61 coils

icemike- there is pretty much a step by step somewhere on this forum already. i had part numbers and everything. i even had part numbers to extensions to remote mount the ICM. so its all here somewhere. search man is all i can say. it would take me some time to find all the info again.

its pretty easy though. find a rubber gasket, or have aluminum weled in, and the l61 VC gasket works, and for the coil, cut off the 4 tabs, and grind an angle onto the 'mount' tabs on the VC

So theres no interference underneath the cover to drill and have an 8an fitting threaded down into it?

Arrival I thought about it but honestly its more than Id wana spend and too pretty for my bay lol. its a daily driven car with turbosport hood soo polished would just get dirty and I wouldnt feel right painting over such a beautiful piece

Honestly, I think the underside is sturcturally the same at the l61. if anything, there might be MORE room on the LSJ cover to drill and tap. I never looked really because i didnt think i would need to modify the cover at all except for what i knew about going into it.. if you click the link in the second or third post in this thread, it takes you to my other thread where there are pics of inside and out.

Honestly I would run a filter on the oil cap, connect the line on the back to a catch can, and plug the hole in the intake flange. ZZP doesn't even use a catch can on thier 898 hp lsj. It works great on my turbo lsj. I am running a ZZP oil cap breather and a catch can on the line on the back side. Once I did this I haven't have a problem with crank case pressure or oil loss! As long as you dont have any place for pressure to enter the crank case and that oil cap breather you wont have any problems!

I already have a nice vented catch can with just one line going from my l61 cover to it..may look into that thanks man but still wana find an lsj cover to mod lol. I troll css a little but didnt have any luck finding one cheap and cheapest Ive seen on ebay is like $100

They go for $80-$100 on there. Still run the catch can, just dont modify the cover at all and buy oil cap breather. Its $30 from ZZP.

I looked on zzp n couldnt find it..ordered a decent size all black breather just gona tap a cap for a barb and clamp on filter. Thanks man when i turbo again soon ill run another line from my catch can to my turbo intake. What should i do with the pcv hole in the head?

You have to search for it on their site. Plug the hold in the head.

Mike I briefly considered bulkheads too, but there is baffling inside the top of the VC that prevent access to array the bulkhead on the inside...you would either need to cut out the baffling and weld it back in hopefully without warping it (it's thin), or cut access holes in the baffling, which IMO is gonna make a mess with the cams just slinging oil at the backs of the fittings. I've talked to some v8 guys who have cut the baffling on their VCs to make clearance for bigger rockers and they say there is a considerable amount of oil spitting.
I'm going to be welding on a AN fitting over the exhaust side of the VC, as well as running an oil cap adapter from Metco Motorsports. Same concept as the ZZP filter, it replaces your oil cap with a 10am fitting that you can then plumb into a catch can system.

Im just gona mod the oil cap by either adding a breather to it or tapping a fitting to run to my catch can since its got a nice size breather on top to vent. After looking at pricing on some on the adapter caps just decided to make my own lol. Thanks guys

Mike, as a temporary fix, I just drilled a spare oil cap, in addition to plumbing a catch can/check valve from the existing VC port. I drilled one larger hole straight down the center of the oil cap, and 4 smaller holes, angled towards the center, from the bottom ofthe cap. Seems to work ok for me, I'm running a 3.1" pulley and pushing it pretty hard while tuning and I'm not seeing any signs of excess pressure backing up.

The cover went on pretty easy once Chris had everything for it, we actually did it while hanging out at a car wash... lol
