custom quad cams (no eco talk please)

This maybe old news......... PLEASE KEEP ECO TALK OUT OF THIS TOPIC, AS IT DOES NOT PERTAIN TO ANYTHING ECO

Ok, So for fun, yesterday I called Comp Cams and spoke with a man named Mike in the tech department. I asked him if they had blanks or could get blanks for LD9. Mike told me that they did not grind cams for the LD9 and never have. He went on to tell me that they stock blanks and grind cams for the quad 4, in any lift size, lobe seperation and duration. Turns out Comp Cams could cut quad cams and have them at your door step in a week.....Price is $200 per cam. Thats not bad at all IMO.

Now I have not done an HO or W41 cam swap before, but I assume Its not terribly complicate. My main question is, how much lift can the HO 35mm lifters accomodate safely? I seen that Brad(Zyaaa) bough a set of cams with .470 lift in my searching for other information.

Also from what I read, The 96-99 LD9 cars seem to run ok without the CPS, and 2k+ cars have issues with idle. Now Im semi interested in this, since ive seen used W41 cams go for $300+ with kinda high miles.

Feel free to discuss this, as it may open up some very nice choices for cams for us quad guys.

isn't colt cams the guys up in canadia that do all the custom grinds?

Getting cams ground isnt the problem....its trying to get blanks. Ive called numerous oem replacement cam manufacturers and none of them sell a blank, or are intersted in trying to get blanks.

hate to say it man but when comp does some digging around they are going to find zero cams or cam blanks. they are completely out and have been for well over a year now. that guy you talked to was wrong. they can grind a set of blanks if you provide them though...

as far as my .470 lift cams go i found them on ebay about a year ago from a guy that had some left over stock from olds racing and jim feuling from the aerotech project. little to nothing exists in terms of parts from this... he did have a complete engine that sold but i have no idea where it went. prolly to another midget racer i would assume.

the lifters can take the high lift its just the rpm they dont like. 8000 seems to be the limit from what ive read over on quad 4 forums. after that they like to self destruct. a solid lifter setup is pretty much needed for over 8k safely.

Has anyone had any luck finding cam blanks for LD9 at all?

not for an LD9... ive never in my life heard of someone getting a set for an LD9. now.. for a quad? absolutely. ive got a set and have sold a few sets to people on here. i found the 4 last remaining sets from crane cams a few years ago.

but quad blanks are what you want anyway... they work the same.

Colt is re-grinding stock cams....though if they were supplied a cam blank I sure they could do that too

About the cam sensor and idle issues, I thought that was just a hit or miss issue? Some people have no issues with that.

Its not an idle issue really, above 5mph the engine wants to high idle. It hits 5mph and the idle drops like someone flipped a switch. This is in 2 00plus cars, the only other 00plus car that has had 2.3 cams without the sensor in it that I know of was running the supercharger reflash and he didnt have the problems. That doesnt really tell us anything though since its a different operating system and will act different without the sensor.

I will take the issues for some nice lopey beefy cams but im not holding my breath.

Im not sure what cam profile I want lol, I wanted boost...but....The more parts I keep seeing that are N/A related makes me wanna go that route.....I have been speaking with my engine builder, so we will see the up and coming months what happens.

I plan to keep contact in contact with Comp Cams on the blank supply..I will keep everyone updated, and maybe if people start buying cams for the quads from them, they will start stocking already ground cams.....

please let me know if you actually are able to buy a set... i'd love to get a replacement .430 .222 dur intake cam that i can get modded for the LD9 but also have the CPS pad welded to it... that way i don't have to down my car to get it the pad put on...

if that case ever happened... i'd sell the old one after the swap

I would not see it as a miracle. They are a cam company.

True im sure if the have molds to cast the blanks from already it is dirt cheap for them to make a run of 10 a couple times a year.

So your saying if you are running say 50 mph and have to slowly come to a stop. You push the clutch in the idle stays high until you get under 5mph?

Mines an auto so it stays reved up to like 2500-3000 when I take my foot off the gas and hit the brake. But Kyle was saying thats what his was doing when he hit the clutch.

well we view things differently then because you just dont find blanks anymore. i dont think they 'make' them either.... i remember reading somewhere that all of the quad blanks came from the same place. which would be CWC foundry... every Q4 cam ive ever came across has had "CWC" stamped into it. blanks, aftermarket ho's, stock ho's, w41's, even my engle .470 cams have the same 'CWC' stamped into them...

When me and my buddy HO cam swapped his 2000 5sp we did not encounter this issue??? His HO cams did not have the CPS pad.

Maybe its a hit/miss thing?

He was using modified 2.4 towers I think (it was some weird set-up that came off a GM prototype transmision testing motor) so he still had the CPS sensor in the hole to block it and it was still connected to the harness.

Maybe that makes a differance?

OP sorry about the off topic.
