'97 cav blown head gasket...time for a build!

Hey whats up everyone? I'm new to the forum here figured I'd make a post ask some questions.

Alright in short...thermostat went bad while my gf was driving to work... blew the headgasket it leaks real bad...The car is bone stock and I want to do it up a little cause she will be getting a new car in a few months so now its time for me to play with it. I've only really worked on bigger trucks and diesels so I dont know what kind of thigns to go for here.

So the real question is what do you guys think I should do? I'm very mechanically inclined ive worked on a lot of older vehicles and built a few engines but nothing small and compact like these things. I'm thinking about doing it up a little. Maybe get a performance head, while ive got that off I'm definetly thinking complete new performance exhaust or at least a 2 piece header setup and making my own pipes from there out (i have the use of an exhaust pipe bender) and most likely an air intake of some sort. So I need some advice on brands positive or negative what I should look for and so on.

Like I said this is my first time working in smaller engines and small cars so I don't know what kind of brands are best so leave me some feed back, thanks a bunch!

there really isnt a 'performance' head you can buy... BUT, the components to make said head urself are available.

you can get 1mm oversized stainless steel valves, custom titanium retainers, 2.3 high output valve springs, deck it, cometic head gasket, coat combustion chambers, valve faces, ext. ports, port the hell out of it, shape combustion chambers... you name it, the sky is the limit.

the BIGGEST performance hindrance on a 2.4 head is the exhaust. PORT THAT ISH!

lmao i just assumed you meant 2.4.

my bad man! same goes for 2.2 head tho, deck it for more compression and best seal, i KNOW you can get stiffer springs and better ratio roller rockers for it, and coatings still apply.
