LD9 Rebuild
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 1:57 PM
So I just got my 96 Z24 out of my mechanic's driveway after 3 years (long story), and got it back to my garage where im going to rebuild the motor due to a bad knock (prolly rod or bearing). on the upper end. I have the motor almost completely stripped and was wondering where i could get some of these parts for my car.

Pistons (Not OEM compression somewhere around 10.1 - 10.5 i heard is safe)
Stainless Steel Valves
Titanium Valve Springs
Crankshaft
Secret Intake Cam (Already have exhaust cam on the way from 92 "under" achieva)
Rods
Bigger TB

Im doing all of this work myself in my garage and just need some help b/c if i building this thing I'm gonna do it right the first time.

Plus: Any other internal mods that you can think of would be greatly appreciated for your input.

i beleive carcustoms has most of that.

most people send a crankshaft out to a machine shop to get knived, edged, whatever people do to them. and you can have your stock TB bored to the size you want. intake cam you can get at a junk yard

pistons, valves, rods- karo at carcustoms.net. he can get up to 10.5:1 wiseco pistons. if your wanting to stay n/a, go with these. go here for the valves as well. they are made from sivalves.com. go with eagle rods, strong and will compliment those nice pistons. insuring a stout bottom end.

to my knowledge titanium valve springs are NOT available for our cars through anywhere. if you really want them your going to need to find a place willing to custom make them. if your running secret cams just buy a set of new springs from gm. they will be fine.

crank... you will be hard pressed to find a 'standard' one unless you get one from a good engine. as far as i know anything you buy from a auto parts outlet is going to be re-sized.

95 2.3 intake cam - a lot of the time these are in the classifieds, keep an eye out. sometimes ebay has them, also keep an eye out. but if you dont want to wait, hit up the secret cam sticky for which cars came with this EXACT cam (be careful, its only ONE year) and then try your local junkyard. OR... try www.car-part.com. this is where i found three of them.

bigger tb- www.smgmotoring.com all day long. they do an awesome job. or again, keep an eye out in the classifieds and ebay.

go with clevite 77 bearings. wiseco's come with their own rings so no need to worry about those.

do a 2.3 oil pump swap. do a search in this forum to find out any and all info pertaining to it. but its definitely something you should be doing. contact me if you'd like the parts.

Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...

I would also recommend ARP head and main studs and bronze valve guides, Karo over at CarCustoms will have these as well or Turbo Tech Racing, another sponsor here will have all of the parts as well.

Correct Brad and Dale....Do that and if you want some more Quad 4 parts let me know.

-H.O. Cams (must use H.O. cam carriers or mod TC carriers)....****consider power steering
-Intake manifold (must be modded to fit LD9 head unless you opt for the 086)
-I also have a complete Powder coated Secret Cam assembly (straight bolt on)
-Rare Quad 4 oil pump baffle (hard to get through GM dealer now a days
-H.O. Quad 4 Ignition coil cover (direct bolt on)
.....etc.

GMR has got nothing on this

Thanks for the help finding the parts. Now I have another question, is there a way to amp up our current ignition system other than scrapping the entire system and putting in a custom one?

just go with the 2.2 coil swap, it should be good enough, for N/a either 10.5:1 or 11:1 ( if you don't mind vibes), don't forget clutch and flywheel, a/c by-pass pulley (if dont use a/c), light-weight crank pulley, alt. puley, 2.3 oil pump, secretcams or H.O. cams, port and polish, copper head gasket, stainless valves, those could be a start for you, it all depends on the build, theres also the L.O. intake mani with t.b.
