Summit Air Filters vs. K&N
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 3:56 PM
I am in need of a new filter and I am across this one which is significantly cheaper than the K&N equivalent, but same exact design.

Im wondering if its similar quality to the K&N, looks to be very similar, I'm guessing I can use my K&N recharge kit with it. Has anyone here purchased a Summit filter before? What do you guys think?

This is off their site :

Washable, cleanable air filters from SummitŪ.

These SummitŪ replacement performance air filters use multiple layers of cotton gauze for excellent filtration without restricting airflow. The gauze is sandwiched between two sheets of wire mesh for durability, and the element is pleated and oiled for big filtering capacity. The SummitŪ replacement performance air filters not only outflow stock filters, but they're also designed to last for the life of your vehicle with proper care.

It is a K&N, I also thought about that and bought a summit brand filter. It came in a summit box and the bag on the filter said K&N as does the filter....

While we are on the subject...

I used K&N clearer and oil on a non K&N filter and it caused the adhesive holding the metal end on the small part of the filter to fail, the filter fell apart. I don't remember what brand filter was but I figured its worth mentioning Use at your own risk.

Consider getting something like an AEM dryflow filter. Still washable and high flow but they filter better than K&N style filters. Amsoil also makes some good filters that don't require oil but with everything Amsoil, your gonna pay for it.

I have the AEM dryflow, highly recommend it.

How do you clean it? Water?

I'm willing to be that "cleaner" is nothing more than something like tide. There's no kind of oil on the filter so it can't be anything that special. You could probably just rinse it with a hose, dry it and be good to go. Unless it's really pigged up.

I bought a summit-brand air filter from them and it definitely wasn't an K&N filter. It is a cotton/gauze washable filter, but kind of flimsy in comparison. Unfortunately I bought it too small for my application, so now it's stuck on the end of my roomies turbo.
