acetone in fuel

Well i drive a 100 miles each day and someone told me this at work. wondering if it would work. To add acetone to your tank of gas and it would help increase your gas mileage and save money at the pump.. Any thoughts on this matter. I don't want to try it and destroy my car.

This was a myth in the motorcycle world as well. I tried it and it had no effect upto 1:10 ratio with gas. Add too much and you'll lower the octane rating (BAD). The theory is that the physical properties of acetone cause the gas to atomize more effectively (think of the current DI tech.) I forget the actually property, maybe vapor pressure? But in the end, its not really effective for whatever reason, AT LEAST in a carburated system. I did not notice a MPG increase, and got some bad pinging under full load when i added too much. Didn't bother pouring it in my car, i just dumped it on a friend and lit him on fire

I just read a thing from GM about this. Being a solvant, it'll only do bad things to everything it touches. I'll get a copy of the letter and post is tomorrow.

horsepower is the force that determines at what speed you hit the wall, torque is the force that determines how far you take the wall with you after you hit it.

If you're really interested in blending fuels and whatever else you may want to try to have power & mileage, get a book titled "Performance With Economy" by Dave Vizard of Popular Hot Rodding Magazine. It may be outdated in it's reference to certain parts listed, but all the principles spoken of & applied in it are sound. And as for any questions as to "What does this Vizard guy know?", he was one of the key guys behind the design of the classic Flowmaster muffler. And later the Dynomax Ultraflow too, IIRC. And we all know how well performing those mufflers are.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

You'd be better off mixing in a small amount of model airplane fuel (30% nitro).
-And no, I'm not saying to try it unless you are willing to risk your car.

I think what your friend may've been referring to was "Tolulene." But to my knowledge, it's only (mainly) used to raise the octane of your fuel, esp. for boosted applications.

it works. nuff said.

100% pure acetone, the ratio is very small though
noticable increases in my cavi, and my fiancees mustang

theres many articles about it, ..it WAS an additive in like.. koreas fuel in general, to get more bang for their buck, but they used cheap acetone and it messes up a bunch of peoples cars so they dont do it anymore

This website is pretty interesting, I don't know if it's legit though.

I mean if it works why not when gas is 3.40 a gallon.. Just dont want to do damage to my car.

....i remember someone tried to convince me putting mothballs in my tank increases the octane giving me better mileage.

i no-longer associate with this person lol

i'm no expert on jbodys,or 4 cylinders for that matter, but i know a thing or 2 about explorers. heres a link to a 93457398475389475 page thread on explorer forums.com, http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133739&highlight=acetone , all about acetone. most members show a increase of up to 10-15% MPGS. Most people use 1-2 oz's of acetone per 10 galons of gas. thats around 30 to 60 ml per 38L of gas. the thread was made by Albino 94LTD, which had a quest for 30mpgs in his explorer. he made it by doing this (as well as a bunch of other things...) he's a really smart person when it comes to @!#$ like that...read through the thread if you want, but i believe it does make a difference.

Won't do anything for you. There isn't enough of a gain over time testing to prove any claims. If acetone increased fuel mileage everyone would be doing it, as it is its one of those "super secret" things the gas companies don't want you to know about thusly making it BS.

You might try using nitrous (slow release). If you could coordinate the release of nitrous you could make cleaner combustion (and thus better gas mileage).

Go to the link. You want ultimate gas milage and power, make a system with oxygen.

no, the acetone will eat away at all your lines, and will eentually wear down your engine. It wont do anything for fuel economy, that stuffs all in the head, just like replacing your air filter to some people lol. even if it did get better gas mileage, you`d lose the money you saved by buying new parts lol
