Will this make a big difference?
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 7:56 PM
I am looking to hush up my exhaust some. I would rather resonate what I have then spend alot more money for a new exhaust system. My car is just all around loud and I would really like to shut this beast up. I have a remote start that I cant use because I dont want to wake the neighbors up. How much of a difference would it really make? It even has a fair amount of interior resonance.

My Problem. Megan Racing catback with magaflow high flow cat.

Please tell me that this will cure my problem.

The cheapest way to do it is just to go and get a cherry bomb glasspack and stick on there. Its the same thing. Just red, and much cheaper. Might want to measure your exhaust and see what the longest length you can put in, and go for that. The longer the better

I love my Magnaflow resonator. There is no interior drone unless you are at the higher rpm range and creates a mellow sound overall. It'll even get rid of that rasp you have. Not sure on the vibrant, but this one is only a couple cents more.

Magnaflow Muffler 4" Round 18" Body 2.25" C/C 10425

You could always get the 22" model if you want it longer.

When I got a resonator, it didn't make too much of a difference at all

Did you check for an exhaust leak somewhere?

It helps a fellow JBO member, so its all good. In fact, I wished it was louder... But keeps the local police off my case.

Nice sig. Its pretty quiet. I have a vibrant catback, and an obx 4-2-1 header. Im going to need something because its going to be loud! I did a quick measure and it looks like the biggest im going to be able to fit is probably a 26 inch overall. Im hoping that enough, if not im going to have to get creative.

I like it just a little raspy. Now, compared to mine it is loud. I'd hate to say it, but it sounds like the Honda's going past my work on the Wednesday night meets at Taco Bell. A resonator will solve the issue and you'll love it.

Guys, hate to break this to you, but I think I must: The inlet/outlet size relation of your muffler's design is acting like a megaphone! You know, those things cheerleaders once used to make their voice louder so they could be heard above the crowd? That weren't amplified? A resonator mid-stream may help but you still will have that megaphone tip. If you went with a muffler of the same flow rate as what you have now, even one of a conventional design, that has the same diameter outlet as it does inlet you would still have all the power you had before just with a quieter note. Then add the resonator and see how quiet things get. Nothing spookier than a car that zips right by barely making a sound. That'll keep you unnoticed by the cops! Oh, and lookup a guy by the name of Dave Vizard, the guru of exhaust design. This is the guy who lead the development of the first Flowmasters. He'll tell you about something called a pressure-wave chamber, what it will do for your exhaust's noise level and how to go about having one on your car.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

the thing i dont like about the vibrant is the large 4 inch tip. Its a great quality piece, but it still looks a little ricey. Im probably going to cut it off an stick on something smaller. Probably a 3 inch tip.

True! One of the first things I learned when I read about a night-and-day difference one of the writers at Kit Car Magazine had a turbo build-up done was how the turbine side of the turbo acts like a muffler in quelching the spaces between exhaust pulses to reduce their frequency, particularly while under boost. Not to mention the total restriction upon the exhaust they place comparatively. This is why turbo cars need as little restriction/backpressure as possible, plus for quick spool-up.
