OBD II to OBD I

Not to sure if this should be in the Tuning Forum. I have a 96 Z24 and was wanting to upgrade so I could have some tuning options. I think I may try to swap to the older OBD - I. My question is what year engine harness would work? And does it have to be cavalier specific or could it be another car?

I would put a 97 in and get HPT, rather than get the OBD-1 and try to chip it.

Would swapping in the 97 be as simple as just the computer or is that the entire harness as well?

My main reason for swapping was cost issues. Whats the going rate on a tune job for the computer?

if you want obd1 then youll need the harness and pcm from a 95 manual Z or GT..after that you can either start burning chips OR do what i did and get the ostrich..which is an imulator that hooks up inplace of the chip and allows you to do on the fly pcm changes real time..like hpt with either a usb cable or even bluetooth

^^^^ HPT for J-bodies doesn't support real-time tuning.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.

well then.. i guess the ostrich i suggested is better..cus mine does real time tuning while the car is running..YAY for 95obd1

all you need to convert to OBD1 is the ecu (16196283) and the plugs that goes with it. you need to repin all the wires to the right position into the 95 plugs. do a search for 95 ecm

nice. i have the apu1, i dont have any software yet. i want to use tuner pro. C. Smyth is working on the definition file and the aldl file also. i have the lc1 wideband so i'm lost as for dattaloging. If C. Smyth is not coming thru with this before march, i think i'll have to go with tunercat but i have no software to datalog.

hpt isn't the limiting factor, its the ECUs

OP: go stand alone and call it a day.

How so?

a 1995 cavalier is only 512 KB of size on it, and you can change\mess with alot more things.

or look at what HPT can do for a F body, V body, or any other car,

HPT droped the ball with Jbodys.

Searched for the 95 ECM and didn't come back with too much help. I have a Chilton somewhere? Can't seem to find it at the moment. It has the ECM Schematic? Doesn't it?...

I would have to change to the 95 Map Sensor? Can the w41 chip still be acquired?

Forgot to ask if that would do away with the EGR?

if you read completely these 2 thread, you will understand most of it.

i know there is the ecm diagram in the haynes manual of both ecu. yes you will have to change to a 95 map sensor.
EGR would be eliminate along with a couple other things...

Not to jack the thread but my vert is a 96. I already have HPtuners. What is involved in swapping in the 07 ecu? Is it just getting a 97 ecu and the plugs and repining them according to the wiring diagrams?

Haha oops...meant 97. I gotta go premium.
