have you ever torn apart an automatic transmission before?

Not to sound condescending at all...

If you havent torn one apart, take it to a shop, or replace the whole trans

if you have, i'll see if i can get the tear down procedure tomorrow when im at school and send it to you

---------

EDIT: oh and you have the 4 speed (4T40 - THM04) auto... they quit using three speeds (3T30 - THM03) in 93/94

Bingo, they had 3 speeds all the way through the 2002 2.2 LN2 model year.

The 4T40 (and similar 4T40-E, 4T45, and 4T45-E) are a series of automatic transaxles from General Motors. Designed for transverse engine configurations, the series includes 4 forward gears. The 4Txx family is an evolution of the original Turbo-Hydramatic 125 transverse automatic introduced in the early 1970s.

The "-E" series is electronically controlled and features an automatic overdrive transaxle with an electronically controlled torque converter clutch.

The 4T40 and 4T45 are assembled at Windsor Transmission in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

4T40

The "MN4" 4T40E is able to handle vehicles up to 4000 lb (1814 kg) GVWR. The final drive ratio is 3.63:1. It is designed for 1.5–3.1 L engines producing up to 190 ft·lbf (258 N·m) of torque.

Gear ratios:
1 2 3 4 R
2.95 1.62 1.00 0.68 2.14

Applications:

* 1995–2005 Chevrolet Cavalier
* 1995-1996 Chevrolet Beretta
* 1995-1996 Chevrolet Corsica
* 1995–2005 Pontiac Sunfire
* 1997–2003 Chevrolet Malibu
* 1999–2005 Pontiac Grand Am
* 1999–2004 Oldsmobile Alero

heres another page

this says

Quote:

The 125 was renamed 3T40 later, following GM's new naming convention. The 4T40-E replaced it starting in 1995

Although the 3T40 (3 Speed) was produced until 2002... In Cavaliers and Sunfires, the 4T40-E was used from 95 on... the 4T40-E is a 4 Speed transmission.

So tell me why I replaced a 3T40 in my GF's 2002 Sunfire last summer when its really a 4T40E...

Maybe I was not clear with what I really need to do. I race a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire on asphalt circle tracks. I want to chabge the final drive ratio and not sure how to do it. To my knowledge, although they may all be essentially the same transmission, they offer different ratios. Is this correct??

i would assume redo the gear sets (sun & planet gears, Etc) to get the ratio you want... i've never modded mine so i dunno what to get or where to get it... you'd probably have better luck in the transmission forum
