Would the Melling oil pump "Melling Oil Pump Chevrolet/Pontiac Cavalier/Sunfire 1996-02 2.4L LD9" work fine instead of doing the 2.3 swap? If not, is there any other option other than the swap?
It seems that it would be a definite improvement over stock.
How much though hasn't really been tested or proven.

That is the oil pump on the highest hp LD9 to date. So I would say not a bad idea. I'm thinking of running it on my LD9's.
