i own an 2004 pontiac sunfire and for the last couple of months my car has been acting funny. At 1st i was hearing a rapid ticking or tapping noise at 2000-2600 rpm during cruising. Then it proceeded to having the car sit in park and rev under the hood bout 4-5K rpm to hear the loud tapping noise. My friend who has listened to the car thinks it might be the valvetrain wearing out. The noise comes from the passenger side of the engine right under the end of the coil pack or cassette pack whichever you prefer and I could feel it when placing my hand on the pack! The last week my car shifts and revs fine but idles funny sometimes like making the tapping noise but then evening out. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
set the example, never let the example set you.
Well, could be lifter problems. Excessive leakdown causes slack in the valvetrain. But, slacking in the valvetrain is called "Tappet" noise and usually louder at idle and fades at higher RPMS. So you can probally scratch that problem.
