02 2200 Lifter and Cam Questions
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 1:41 PM
In an earlier post I was deciding wether I wanted to put an ecotec in my vehicle or just build my 2200 shortblock that i happen to have had sitting around. Well I decided to build the block. I'm getting the crank lightened and balanced, putting in eagle rods and special .20/1000 larger pistons because of the boreing and honeing done to the block. I do not want to do forced induction to the car....maybe spray nitrous though and I was wondering....

I see a couple people make cams for the 2200....jbodyperformance, mantapart and IMW to name a few. My question is what Cam has worked for you peoples and what lifters have you had the least trouble with. I know JBP has some problems with thier lifters. At this time I do not have anything done to the head of the vehicle except a mild porting and polishing and the head milled 20/1000.

What are some good Cams(i know i have only one just want a list of some) out there that you've guys not had trouble with and what are a good set of lifters to use? I just want something that would be good for a normal driving range for N/A and maybe Nitrous.

Oh and I don't care if the Car runs choppy....I like it.

Well, that .20/1000 overbore would be impossible to measure with standard machining tools maybe try 20/1000
Stay away from the importperformanceparts cams and JBP everything for the 2200. Most people just have their stock cam reground for ~$150 from Crane, comp, whatever, which is all JBP does. Also, the JBP lifters are (most likely) just stock lifters with stiffer plunger springs, but I have never heard of problems with them except for empty checking accounts as a result.. Search for LT1 lifters in this forum for info on how to make your own for ~$20.
For a mild performance cam, check out the profile MadJack is using.

Actually the lifters are destroyed in the "donor" block so I am gonna need new ones. Maybe take the ones that are in mine now.... But anyways thanks for the info. And I got it right the 2nd time on the head......20/1000

Destroyed? Uh-oh... you may have more troubles than you think. If the timing chain and/or tensioner failed in that donor, like I think it has, then you definitely want to be sure to have all the oil gallies blown clear and get the lifter bores properly bushed. Reason why is the LN2 oiling priority is: lifters & cam, then crank in that order. If any frags ever get intothe oiling on the LN2, there's almost no saving it.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

If he's having it machined, then its pretty standard practice for the machine shop to do a complete wash on the block... but you definitely want to let them know you've had lifter problems so they can also check your lifter bores and all of the bearings for any clearance problems or signs that metal has gotten anywhere you really don't want it.

When I get home I'll send you a word document I made by copying and pasting SlowOleJ's (or was it Madjack? i get so much awesome info from those two i get it mixed up sometimes) lifter rebuild thread, i'm at work at the moment and don't have the file here.
