2200 help
Monday, July 31, 2006 11:30 AM
Ok, I am new to this site, but I need some help. I currently dirt track race a 98' 2.4l 5 speed. on a 3/8 mile dirt track. My gearing is a little off. I run third gear, but can be doggy coming out of the corners. I also have a 98' 2200 5 speed that I have not built yet. How will this car stack up to my 2.4l? What are the specs and stuff on the 2200? And If I decide to do a swap, I have the wiring harness and motor for a 2.4l. Can I just plug it directly into the wiring on the car of the 2200 or will I have to take the wiring out of the dash too? I also have a 2002 ecotec motor and tranny. What would I have to have to do the swap on it? Any help would be appreciated. My thoughts is to have both these cars built that way I can take the 2.4 to the bigger tracks and have the others for the smaller tracks if they will run good enough. I know the ecotec will, but not sure on the 2200.

so your saying your swapping a 2.4 for a 2200???

may i ask why...

stock 2.4 will beat out a 2200 anyday... but a built 2200, with forged internals will outrun a stock 2.4 anyday...

but if your going to stay stock id stick with 2.4....

built 2200 with forged internals i say would run 15.4 in the quarter...

I would love to see 15.4 in a quarter dirt track. However, i would stick with the 2.4 and get a better suspension. But please wait for another response, dirt track recommendations, is not my cup of tea.

I am keeping the 2.4l but I am also thinking of building the 2200 car too. I just didn't know if gear ratio would help me out better with the 2200. I am a little slow coming out of the corners in the 2.4l and I didn't know if the 2200 would be better on this size of track.

I have an extra 2.4l motor and wiring harness for the engine. Will that wiring harness plug right into the wiring on a 2200 or will I have to change the wiring under the dash too?

And I don't want to make anyone mad, I did do some searching on here and didn't come up with my answers. I really don't have any info on the 2200 motor with a manual transmission. So any help or info would be appreciated.

First off, since your division allows you to run a 2.4L, stay with that. (this is comming from a 2.2L/2200 OHV fan!)

Secondly, sounds like you need more gear. Look into the other gear ratios available for the Isuzu transmission you have. Do a search in the transmission forum for more info. I forget what other cars came with the same transmission internals. In the mean time, If you can run a shorter tire diameter, while maintaining the same section width, try a tire with about 1"-2" shorter diameter on the drive wheels.

If you still plan on building the 2200, here's a couple of links about circle track racing the 2.2L/2200 OHV, along with a few chasis set up tips: "circle track racing", from the Transmission Forum,"Circle Track Racer Need Performance Help", from the Performance Forum and "Welding up Front Differential for Dirt Racing", from the Racing Forum.

Hope these help!

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know about the wiring though if I was to put another 2.4 motor in this 2200 car? Can I just plug the engine wiring harness into the same wiring that comes out of the dash? Or am I going to have to change the wiring under the dash too?

if the 2200 is 2k+ you need all new wiring i think. I'm just going off of what people say about the eco swaps. On the eco swap if the car is 2k+ you don't need all the wiring. I would try to swap that ecotec if at all possible.

the 2200 is a 98. I don't have the wiring harness for the eco. I do for the 2.4 though. The 2.4 is a 98 too
