I just got a new custom exhaust a couple of weeks ago, it's a 2.25" catback witha 24" resonator and a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. Well i know I'll prolly get flamed for this, cause I didn't seard well before but I think it's a little too quiet..I liek the tone when I can hear it, it is near stock db though. I think I'm leaning towards wanting a little bit louder tone. Now my question is..should I dump the resonator and keep the muffler..easy fix..but might get raspy..or should I buy a new more aggressive muffler and hopefully have it louder and still no rasp? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm guessing you have the stock exhaust manifold and cat for it to be that quiet. Dropping the resonator may not make that much of a difference with the stock manifold and cat. I've got the same muffler, 2 1/4", 53035 cat, and Nopi header with no res and it is pretty loud when your stepping on it. Has a little bit of a drone at highway speeds too. Switch to a header and high flow cat and I promise you it will be louder and sound good with the resonator in.
go magnaflow race series, thats what i have on custom 2-1/4 with no resonator, no header, and stock cat. Sounds sweet, no rice, just nice deep and clean.
yeah rest of the engine is stock except intake..which is what I hear around 3k over my exhaust..I just don't know if I wanna just try a different muffler or get a new muffler and get rid of the res. but yeah..I guess I found a good exhaust for the guys who want a stock sound. thanks guys
^^What is your exact setup because I want a new exhaust that is equal to the stock sound in both db and sound?
sorry was away from my computer for the weekend. I have compression bent 2.25" piping from the cat back with a 24" thrush resonator and a dynomax super turbo muffler.
i just got the megan racing cat and put on a turbo header and down pipe with a hi flo cat and made a plate to cover where the turbo hooks up, its nice and deep while still maintaining an agressive tone that says "step off b!tch"and its not too loud or to quiet and not raspy at all, i cant wait to get the turbo on there, the other problem is that you had the piping compression bent wich makes wrinkles in the tubing which slows down airflow. this may or may not bet your problem but it will deffinatly affect performance a bit

You have no idea of what you're talking about... Compression bending does not create ripples. The pipe becomes slightly deformed, however it is a smooth surface. At most I would guess you would gain MAYBE a half of a hp going with mandrel... and for the extra cost, you could get something else like a header instead and gain a lot more than getting mandrel. It's just not worth it on our cars.

Can you post a pic of that, because I've never heard of anything like that.

Nope, you are thinking of crush bends. Compression bends are like mandrel bends.
Yeah, compression bends are similar enough to mandrel to not make too much of a difference in performance, crush bends have the wrinkles. I'm still just trying to decide if i want to take out the resonator and just put tubing there with the same muffler or keep the resonator on and try a different muffler. I tell people I have an exhaust right now and they say, "You do? I can't even tell."
ive got pretty much the same set up you do but w/o the resonator....stock manifold to stock cat then 2.25 piping to a dynomax super turbo muffler. Taking the resonator out ISNT going to make that much of a difference in sound. I have the AEM CAI and the intake drowns out the exhaust at 3k and up untill then you can barely hear the exhaust. All of this is from inside the car w/ the windows down though. So if you really want to change the tone and make it louder put the header and high flow cat on there and then see what it sounds like. If at that point you still want it to be louder then take the resonator off and it will be a lil louder. Hope that helps and if you are unable to understand my typing ill write it again its just it sucks cuz i just woke up.
ya sorry bout that i was thinking of crush bend but once again compresion does slightly deform the tubing, the only way to get really smooth flow is to cut and weld all the corners, but thats a pain in the azz.
