I was just wondering what everyone with the swap has for cold startup idle and operating temp idle pressures
with a 3/8" feed hole now that the engine is broken in i'm getting 60psi @ idle cold, 35 warm and a high of 77psi going through the gears warm

Did you get better pressure as you got farther into the break-in?
i dont know whats going on with mine, but i just hooked my oil pressure gauge and at cold startup i got as high as 80psi, but when its warm i have about 10-12psi at idle and no more than 30psi at wot even at up tp 7000rpm, it still wont go higher than 30-32psi!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems somewhat like mine. Once the motor gets to the point the fans comes on at idle I get about 10psi, and at medium rpm's I get 30-35psi. I use Royal Purple 5w30 motor oil by the way...

i use mobile1 5w30. mine doesn't go higher than 30 even at 7200rpm!!!!!!!
i'm scared.... maybe its my oil pump thats bad!!!
anyone know how to check for that?
thanx
im getting low pressure so im gonna drop my oil pan and see whats up with the pump and check all the plugs. if you are having low pressure with this swap i would do that same just to be on the safe side!!!
yeah, i think thats what i'm going to do....
but once the pump is out, is there any way to tell if its good or not?
or i'll have to get a new pump and try it??
thanx
i plan on getting a new pump, but i think you can take one of the covers on it, then see if the pump is scored from any metal getting in there. ive been reading that the screen in the pickup is almost useless due to the fact that the holes in the screen are bigger then what it takes to destroy a pump so if you were to be breaking a engine in like i have been, a small piece of metal shavings is all it could take to destroy your pump. these metal shavings do not get filtered by anything else but that screen, and after the oil pump eats them up then it finally gets to the oil filter and that is why your supposed to change your oil imediately after intial drive.
ok! i did an oil change after 200KM then an other one after 1000KM.
but before i'm going to try to put the pressure unit on the intake side to see, and then under the water pump. so i'll be able to see if the pressure is also low to these place.
i'll probable end up changing the pump too!!! put i'll have to do it on the driveway...
when are you going to drop the pan? let us know if you find the problem.
thanx
Funny this is the low oil dummy light on the dash has never come on.
Any idea what psi it is actually supposed to trigger this light on the dash?
J
i plan on dropping the pan in a week or so, but we will see. low oil light comes on at about 5 or 6 psi but by then with the ld9 you probably have already spun a rod bearing.

Ofcourse I have a LD9, go figure
I am assuming that running high quality motor oil thus far may be saving me...

my oil feed hole is drilled a lil over 5/8" and i 12psi at idle hot and 25-30 at wot. may just be the big feed line. useing 15w40.
what do you guys think?
I was in class when i typed that anyway with a lil more detail....
I have about 80-85 psi cold start up with 15w40 and about 90 cold driving.
When it starts getting up to temp it slowly starts dropping psi after it completly warm iam getting about 10-12 psi at idle and anywhere from 24-25 psi driving and about 25-33 psi at wot at 6200rpm.
I know the stock gm specs on a 2.4l for oil psi is 10psi at idle and 30psi at 3000 rmp they say 30psi in a stock motor is good to red line. but 30 psi is the minium psi. But i also have a larger feed passage.
I have about 700miles on the new engine no problems what so ever I have changed the oil about 3 times always cut the filter oen no metal shaving or anything.
Like i said my oil feed passage is drilled a lil over 5/8.
Luke Heier is getting about 25 at idle warm and about 38-40 wot. His feed passage is 7/16 my passage i forget the exact size but i know its just a lil bigger than 5/8 whitch is alot bigger than 7/16 that could be some of the pressure loss.
What do you guys think?
hoping someone has some insight.
couldnt hurt to just change the pump paul. for a lil bastard like urself it could be done in like 2 hours or less. like tom said, the pickup screen is a joke and lets debris by that could be harmful for the pump.
especially if you didnt replace your pump after all the metal you had floating around from what had happened with the first build.
Tom,
Has Brian had any problems with pressure since his build?
dont get excited..i have a 2.3 pump IN a 2.3 and i get appx. 85 psi on cold start up 10-15 warm idle and about 45 on accel. .. so i dont see much wrong with those numbers
GM rates the 2.3 pump at 30 psi at 2k rpms as a minimum spec. so as long as your above that you are alright.
i get about 25psi at 2k rpm with a feed hole of 41/64" and about 30-33 wot i have 930 miles on the car with 0 problems.
Iam sure if it was a problem we would already be having troubles.
Most ppl with the swap have a 7/16" hole vs 41/64" thats a huge differance in feed hole size iam almost positive thats where the problem is not so much of a problem with the bigger feed line were also getting more volume flowing. Correct?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thats actually me jesse left his account open.
