I am looking for a single cat back setup for an 03 cavalier. I cant seem to find anything cheaper then like $400. Thats a little crazy I think.
I know a custom made one is an option, and would cost ALOT less. But i really want to look at all my options.
Does anyone have a reccommended brand and or websites with the best deals?
Well if you really want cheap, check into the Pacesetter cat-back for our cars.. Its a bit raspy though lol.. I wouldn't recommend that kit, but you said cheap.

Where can I find the pacesetter monza line for a good price though? My usually places to shop doesnt carry it.
nm, i found where i can buy it.
Damn, thats pretty good deal. Only downfall is its painted right? its not stainless? How well does the paint hold up here in NY i wonder where the salt flies during the winter. I suppose I could always "underbody coat" it with that high temp rubber underbody stuff.
If its to raspy, I have resonators on a stock srt-4 exhaust that I have in the garage, I can cut one of them bad boys out.
Thanks for the quick help!

Paint burns off in no time at all. The only good way to use that exhaust is to put an enormous resonator/glasspack in it and swap the muffler out immediately. Course by the time you do all that, you might as well have had a custom exhaust job done. The hangars suck a$$ anyway. I got this system a long time ago, and nowadays, it's not even the same system anymore cuz I've had to modify it so much to make it bearable sounding.
Alternatives to the Pacesetter for premade cat-back kit that are under $400 are the Vibrant cat-back @ turbotechracing.com $370, and the RK Sport single @ carcustoms.net $300. Those aren't necessarily the best prices for those systems, just the first sub-400-dollar systems I found. The RKSport system does need a resonator badly though, so I hear. If you feel daring, go on eBay and try to find the Megan Racing cat-back. Very cheap, and everyone here who has it loves the hell out of it.
some cars ive heard them on have been a raspy , others have been pretty good sounding
if you have a header and high flow cat , then a resonator is a must
Maybe I'll take a look into the RK Sport kit as well.
And I have stock header and cat. I just started working on the car a few months back.
So far I have:
SRT-4 wheels with 215-45-17 dunlops, eibach pro kit springs, B&M short shifter, K&N typhoon intake kit.
I wanted to spend as little as possible for an exhaust (who doesnt??) But if the exhaust simply wont last the test of time, then I cannot see how even a cheap one is a good investment. I really do like the appearance of the pacesetter, and I like how everything is black really. But other then that it seems to have alot of downers.

It's not a cat-back. It's a rear-section exhaust system. That already is close to the $400 he didn't wanna spend, then you get to spend the rest of your money on getting a resonator and additional piping welded up by a shop to complete the cat-back. You'd be over $400 before you knew what hit you.

???
Looks like a cat-back to me. "Cat-back" is from the catalytic converter back to the end of the car... it doesn't include the cat itself.
yeah , but that says rear section
the magnaflow single is in the 500 range , for the cat back
the rear section is less expensive
Just how raspy is this pacesetter?
How is it when cruising? like say maintaining a speed at like 1.5-3k rpms.
I dont mind if its not super deep and refined. But if it sounds like a straight pipe with a fart can i dont want to go near it.
I mean its got a muffler right, so it cant be HORRIBLE? Even if it is, resonators are pretty cheap, so it would be a fast fix.
Id HIGHLY recommend the RKsport catback.. Im going on my 3rd year now in having it.. I love it, its a deep sounds.. People tell me my car doesnt even sound like a 2.2 with it, they say it sounds like a 2.4 with mods.. I love it, however it did get raspy at about 3500 RPM's once I added a header. But I can live with that..

isnt there mandrel bent cat backs going for 200 shipping included in the classifieds right now?
the rk/magnaflow system is raspier than hell
i hate the muffler they used , and there is no resonator with it either
but it was the best 100.00 spent , since i got it used
and ive been to cheap to put a different muffler on it
mine sounds worse than the pacesetter ive heard that was raspy
I've got the pacestter catback on my car. I've had it for about a year now. It is a little raspy when your on the throttle but just cruising around it's not bad at all. I do plan on changing the muffler and getting a resonator real soon though, primarily because i'm getting a header and high flow cat. And I'm not to fond of the looks of the muffler that came with the kit. a 5" tip is just a little too big sitting under the rear bumper of a cavalier, looks a little goofy.
My other car is an interceptor.
I have the RK single exhaust and love it. Karo sells it for $300 with free shipping. It will need a resonator which you can get for about $20.

Hey Steve, you say that you have had the pacesetter for a year? How is it holding out in the weather? Has the paint burnt off yet? Is it rusting? Or is it holding up real good?
My #1 concern is how long this piece will last. I would like it to be reliable like a stock exhaust.
i like my thermal r&d cat-back expensive unless you find it like i did and pay 160 shipped to my door
Cheap and reliable don't go together. Your trying to get stainless steel for the price of a tin can it sounds like to me.

steve the tip on the pacesetter is 4"
no 5" tips are even available from them
the pacesetter piping is aluminized steel , and then painted in the places where the exhaust gets hot it will burn off and leave the aluminized coating exposed
best i can tell you if you get is to wash the cat back in a similar fashion as you would your car , to get the road salt off

Had it for over a year. Paint burns off completely everywhere except the muffler and a few inches of pipe surrounding it (anywhere that's visible to other people outside the car) in like 2-3 weeks. No a spot of rust in sight. Hanging in there like a champ. Hangar in the mid-pipe allows for a lot of sway, and the rear hangars are the root of all that is Evil, but still doesn't knock/rub/hit anything down there while driving.
Why the hell would they paint it if it all burns off in 2 weeks lol.
It seems like its really not to bad of a piece.
Hey, is the stock exhaust stainless steel?
Stock exhaust are stainess.
