Okay let me explain why I'm asking this. I'm trying to get a real mellow, quiet, deep tone to my exhaust, so I'm trying to get a very large/long muffler, with a 22" resonator. Now, I'm looking at Magnaflow, and they make a 5x11x22 2.5" IN/OUT muffler, which is almost what I have stock, just with the 1-7/8" IN/OUT and 20" length. They don't make a 2.25" muffler close to those specs, closest would be:
5x8x18 2.25" IN/OUT
or
4x9x18 2.25" IN/OUT
So i was just thinking, I'd like 2-1/4 resonator and pipe from the cat, and then once it gets to the muffler it would just widen up to 2-1/2. Is that an okay idea? I think it should be fine, but I'm no expert at this stuff yet.
Thanks
It should be fine, you'll lose alittle BP but 2.5 is fine.

^^^I second that, except for the backpressure part, which as most will tell you, the less the better. Its all about exhaust gas velocity. It will be just fine as long as the rest of your tubing is 2.25, which won't effect your exhaust gas velocity at all.
If you plan to turbo, you might as well just upgrade to 2.5" tubing.
