Exhaust noise
Wednesday, September 14, 2005 6:46 AM
I have a 2004 sunfire with a kawasaki zx9 titanium exhaust system custom fitted to it. since installing the system (bolted right up) i hear a whistling sound coming from the rear, noticibly louder with the back seat down. Could this be an exhaust leak, or just a by product of aftermarket exhausts?

Just by guessing, is that a street bike muffler?

Yes. It came of my 2000 zx9. It was hanging in the building and i decided i wanted something a little more aestheticly pleasing. It bolted right up to the stock hanger and looks great. When i get my digital camera working i'll snap a few pics.

By the way, most people say the noise makes the car sound turbocharged. I happen to like it, but was just wondering if it was something to be concerned with.

....sounds like an exhaust leak, and you are getting a vaccum effect back into the cat back pipe. check for leaks, maybe youll find the source of the whistling. but i wanna see pics of the setup!

I'm at college right now and my digital camera is at home. As soon as i can get some pics of it and load them onto my computer, i'll try to post them. I haven't posted anything yet, so it may be a while before i figure it out. I will tell you this, it looks a lot better on the car than it does on the bike! (Sounds better too...)

spotabee: it's a 2.5 in. inlet with a 3 inch outlet.
buzz122: i took the factory muffler off and replaced it with the titanium canister. It sounds great, relatively quiet, screams on top end, and picked up a few ponies along the way.

get yourself a catback on there with a resonator and see if that does you any good

only thing i need to make a true catback would be about a 20" section of pipe to go from the cat to the beginning of the canister. I have thought about using a resonator but my local exhaust shop has never heard of one. What do you recommend?

I avoid that shop like the plague. Unfortunately they are the only one in town. I had my friend who is a certified welder do my system. If i do have a problem that requires the help of a shop, i will find one near campus here in huntington.

i don't know if i'm going to install a resonator or not. I am thoroughly pleased with the sound as it is. How would a resonator change the sound, louder or quieter; deeper or more of a high pitch? prices seem reasonable. also do you have to install it with a hanger or just weld it in without one?

it gets weled inline with your exhaust...it helps to filter out and raspyness or those wonderful pops you get on decceleration. A much smoother and cleaner sound....no exhaust should be without one

I may try that. I have noticed a lot of pops and cracks on deceleration. It's kind of embarrassing when it does it in front of people. A glasspack will solve that? I have a couple at my shop in the corner, came off of a 1980 buick drag car my friend has.
